My Plextor CDRW drive has died. Any suggestions for a new one?

I guess I'll need new software as well.

I'm considering the PlexWriter 48/24/48A, whuich seems fast and hopefuly
good.

Do they all have underwrite buffer nowadays? That seems like a vital feature.

Any tips quite helpful!

Plextor writers are too expensive, I would just go for a Lite-on 52x24x52 Retail from newegg for $45.50.

Well, if you want top of the line go with a NEW plextor, if you want the second best, get a lite -on

Plextor is still very good. I also like Teac, Asus, Ricoh and the new 52x samsung w/ 8MB buffer (only on the retail pack- SW-252BRNS -drives, OEM has 2MB).
Samsung retail pack can be had for $42.19 + very reasonable S/H!

After the rebate they are almost the same price during the Dell deals.

I owned both the Plextor and Lite-ons. Great drives, neither one has failed me. The Lite-on tends to be a bit more loud than the Plextor. Either one should be fine for your needs.

I'll give a vote here for the 52x24x52 Lite-on. Excellent, fast(Allthough somewhat noisy), and reliable drive. But be warned though, This drive does not like to play nice with Drive image2002 and CD media rated at anything higher than 40x max. All CD-RW's work ok too. With media that will let the Lite-on spin up to it's rated speed while imaging a drive, You will almost certainly get a 1805 error and drive image will stop. This was proven over three machines and 5 different types of media all with the same 52x burner.

The new plextor premium looks nice also, dunno how much they go for...supposingly you can fit almost 1gb of data on a regular 700mb cdr.

lite-on.. plextor isn't better...

they're both equally as good... you can't say plextor is better when lite-on is already flawless...
