Looking to replace a CD-Rom in another system. In search of a fast (50x+) drive with solid seek times, read performance and CD-RW performance. Don't really care about DAE, although it would be nice to have decent DAE quality/performance.

Any opinions/review links on...

Asus CDS520 (52x)
Digital Research DRCDROM56 (56x)
CyberDrive CD566D (56x)
Mitsumi FX5401W1A (54x)

...or any other recommendations?

NOTE: I prefer DVD stand alone players, so a DVD-Rom isn't an option.:)

I agree with both gregor and Trader. I have both an Afreey 52X and a Toshiba 16X/48X DVD-ROM drive. They are both great drives with excellent compatibility.

I just have a question for you? Why are you ruling out a DVD-ROM? You don't NEED to watch movies on it, but there are some DVD-ROM discs out there...not many, but more should be showing up sometime. I'm not saying you SHOULD get a DVD-ROM, just that you needn't discount having one just because you watch movies on a set-top box.

The only software I've seen on DVD is a few games and encyclopedias, niether of which is of any importance to me. I'm only ruling out DVD-Roms for the time being, as I have no use for one. If I see the need down the road, I'll get one.:) Anyway, they usually have performance issues with with CD-RWs or DAE, or both. Not to mention the max CD read speed is what, 40x?

As for the Afreey, it's CD-RW performance is a concern.

Again, my criteria is:
  1. overal media read performance
  2. CD-RW performance
  3. access times
  4. DAE performance/quality (least important and quality is prefered over performance)
