Hello,

I finally decided to upgrade from my current system, 6300/4850 to a 2500k/6950

My original video card (4850) just barely fit into my existing antec case. i bought this case about 5-6 years ago and thought i could keep it through the upgrade because it still looks great with piano black and the material on the sides to block all the sound. i forgot which model it is.

i received the vid card today before the mobo and cpu so i decided to put in the video card in the meantime while i wait. i could not believe how big these video cards have gotten!!

its so big in fact, it doesnt fit my case!! this really sucks because i made a budget that i have to go over for a new case.

there are too many choices out there and its a little hard buying online.

can anyone please recommend a case for me that would fit this video card?

do i need a mid size or full size case?

also, will my current power supply work with the new mobo and video card?

i dont know the name but it powers a gigabyte ds3/4850. is it an outdated standard?

thx!

your new video card draws about 20 watts more than the old one. anandtech bench doesn't have power figures to compare the E6300 and the 2500k.

other than that none of us can tell you because we don't know what you have and what else you're getting.

the plug on the 6950 card isnt the same as the 4850. what type of psu model can handle a 6950?

the cards itself can draw up to 150-160W on stock.

What wattage is the psu that you have?

The 4850 is probably 6pin and the 6950 was probably upgraded to 8pins.

if you are looking for budget mid size case, i suggest in win Track, i recently was able to get one for $50 (second hand but brand new unused) searching online little you can find good deal.

Best part it has good space open in front for long video card with both crossfire and sli set up. so not that long or to tall. as many new mid size cases are too long for long video card and the proportion just goes all wrong for looks goes.

I have an Antec Solo, which sounds like your description. I had to mod my case to get the 570 in there by cutting the hdd bay. The only problem with this is that the video card blocks some air flow. I ended up making a bracket to hold a 120mm and 92mm in the front and now all is well. If I had it to do all over again I would get a different case.

And here I come, saying nobody should by thermaltake, because last time I bought something from them (Element V or something), it did NOT match the specs, they said 230mm where it was 200mm, and 200mm where it was 170mm.

More seriously, there are many case options, and thermaltake almost never is the best, so take your time to read case reviews (many, because most are total shit by people who support only their favorite brand, like antec / coolermaster , lots of fanboyism out there).

The bigger the case, the heavier the case, the more airflow you get.
200mm side fan on the vga's is nice, exhaust fan is nice (usually 120mm), and the rest is more about decoration than performance, although one or two fans in the front for intake can help.

Just moved my system into a Zalman Z9 Plus. Decent case with lots of Fans and with room for my 5870. Also comes with 4 120 mm Fans Installed with spots for 3 more. 4 of the total spots can take 140mm Fans.

Just wanted to throw out there that the Antec 300 case works great for the 6950.

I just built a new computer with the exact same CPU/GPU and the 6950 fits fine into the case.

It will extend into the HD bay slightly, but since the Antec 300 has a very long HD bay area, you should have no problem fitting both the GPU and multiple HDs.

Good Luck
