Looking for a card to support my new Dell P2815Q (28") monitor at 3480x2160 pixels. Inputs: HDMI(MHL), DP1.2 & MiniDP. Got it for max content on screen. Don't need gaming so I assume that might save me $. Desktop is Dell XPS8500, Windows 7. Any ideas?

All you need is a Haswell CPU with displayport output.

edit: since you're a dell 8500 machine it could possibly work depending on whether you opted for a dGPU? All 600 series GPUs can work, but it depends on output configuration. The preferable output is displayport, but HDMI also works.

If you need something new, it really depends. If it supports 4k it's generally listed in the specs, but all GTX 600 or above kepler GPUs can work but output config varies per card on the low end (you need DP or HDMI output). On the AMD side some work but it depends on output configuration which varies per card. Just check specifications at newegg.

Solhaltang, it's an Intel i5 - 3450 CPU @ 3.10 GHz. Not sure of my power supply wattage (400?). It's prob. on my original invoice, but can't find it.

I liked the look of that but the 30 refresh rate seems a bit slow for video possibly.

Blackened23, Thanks. The GT640 looks like my ticket - for price & hi-res. The specs say "4096x2160 resolution supported through a single HDMI connector. 4096x2160 resolution is not supported with two DVI connectors."

Don't totally understand it, but I have an older HDMI cable. Probably not MHL, which seems to be a requirement. Guess I'll find out.

If you do get a new video card, make sure you have a compatible cable for 4k as well. The older HDMI cable may not be sufficient, depending on version.

Good luck

Finally found a knowledgeable Dell rep. After researching, she said an NVIDEA GeForce 660 should work. But its over $200. She's looking into the GT 640 ($90) and will get back to me tomorrow. Dell estimated 5-6 wks delivery. Got it in 2 days, so no rush I guess.

Thanx Eric. Dell said the 660 WILL work, but I think, as you suggest, I'll try the 640 if I can return it in case it doesn't work. I'll then have to deal with the cable issue. It's amazing how little Dell knows about the products they sell.

Note that not every GT640 can do it. It must have HDMI or DP out. And not all GT640 cards have that.

Have you considered buying from newegg? They have a much wider selection of GT640 cards...
