need car help on VW golf

I'm working on this 1996 VW golf Sport AUTOMATIC with a electrical and brake problem. Here's what i know so far...THe car starts but it cannot get out of park.

1.) Both rear tail lights dont work.
2.) Car starts fine but cannot shift any gears
3.) Fuse #20 which is the brake light keeps shorting out the fuses....i changed it 3 times and POP! blows the fuses.
4.) Check the rear tail lights and one of them has a broken bulb
5.) Rear tail lights are missing some wire plugs that plug into the tail light itself.

My hypothesis is that there is an electrical problem which is causing to short the Brake light fuse which causes the auto tranny not to detect brakes when trying to shift gears. My plan is to buy new bulbs and the missing plug adapters and hopefully it would work. The grounds are all connected too....sigh...damn VW's
 
Your diagnoses is correct gregshin, buy a repair manual with a good wiring diagram along with the missing harness.

Better than 1960's Jags, MGs, Triumphs, Austin-Healys, and, well, pretty much anything British.

At least the Dodges self diagnose engine sensors at the turn of the key 3 times 🙂

lol ish cool chief...the car is running strong...just hit the 500 mile mark and changed the oil to mobil one synthetic. Engine feels alot more responsive. I was using some heavy wieght dyno oil to help seal the seals and get all the nasty build up grime out of the engine. The engine was sitting at a engine importer for lord knows how long. If you're in LA or near i'd love to take ya for spin

I wish.....I live in TX 🙁 I was out there during Christmas break with my cousin though...@$$load of imports (more than here in Dallas). Anyway whenever you get it on the dyno and on the track we'd all love to see how it turns out 🙂
