need camcorder recommendation

Trying to help a friend out. She wants to spend no more than $500 on miniDV camcorder. What features, if any, should I be on the lookout for? Haven't ever bought a camcorder myself, so I don't know what to look for really, but she knows even less than I do. Would appreciate any help you can provide.

Go to BestBuy and check out Canon's ZR series. Very good MiniDV for beginners. Here's a review on the ZR300 to get you started.
