Alright I got about 1965$ for my new rig, I have been posting here for around two months gathering information waiting for my money. Now its time to buy. Im a heavy gamer and I need a great pc to last until at least beginning of next year. I would like a GTX/XTX and maybe a 4400+ but i dont know exactly. If you were to spend 2000$ on a pc no monitor or keyboard or mouse what would you choose? Thanks. EDIT: Dont need a case either. Just need to know what cpu gfx card and ram you would choose. Im pretty confident i can overclock if you suggest it.

Hmm....DFI mobo with 2GB of G.SKILL PC4000 then throw in a 3800+ X2 (those OC like a mofo I heard) and a 7900GT (OCed versions tend to artifact from what I'm reading so you should go with a more conservative OC).

You wouldnt go with a GTX build? I want it to be super stable as well Im thinking along the lines of a Opteron 170. I would like to play FEAR on high settings too.

I am in practically same situation as you are. I am running on ATI 7500 from last 3-4 years and this is it. I am not gonna waste my summer!!!

Do this :

1. Get yourself a decent singlecore CPU (AMD 64 3700+ is what I just bought yesterday) and overclock it.
2. Get a kick ass GPU (I just bought X1900XT for 400$ with rebates...that is combo offer with CPU). Dont buy XTX or GTX since DX10 is coming out sometime later this year (not sure though). If you read the review of X1900 series on Anandtech, they dont recommend spending an extra 100$ when buy XTX rather than XT. It shows just 5-7% improvement (non Crossfire config).
3. Buy a good Case because it will last forever until it breaks !! I will last for next few builds atleast unless you get bored of it.
4. Finish the system with a nice PSU/MoBo/RAM/HD.

You should end up with a total of 1100$ without monitor.

5. Wait till next year (prolly March/April), and upgrade to a better Conroe CPU. By that time you will get more reviews on conroe and it will be more established in the market. Prices might go down a bit 😉.

6. Enjoy your summer!

You overclocking? What games will you be playing? How quiet does it have to be? Do you already have speakers, or do you want to upgrade them?

Ive got sennheiser HD555s and now im thinkin about AM2, I want to play ut2004 cs 1.6 fear quake 4 etc. I just need suggestion for RAM/Mobo/GOU/CPU Im now thinking Foxconn(seems better than M2N) and a 4000+ X2 and Corsair EPP with a 7900GTX but i really dont know right now. Im building it for ut2007 which is a dx9c game so I need a very fast gpu for it.

Buy a $400 piece of ****** that will still play everything fine. Invest the rest for 6 months (CDs, or Bonds). Spend your $1600 on the next generation of parts that will toast anything you could buy now for $5000+.

I would actually wait for conroe, anything you buy now will be soon outdated. Read pride and prejudice over the summer instead of gaming.

If you really cant wait, this is a good setup:

DFI lanparty nf4 ulra
Opteron 165
g.skill ddr500s
7900gt or x1800/x1900 xt or something good.

Dont waste your money on a 170, its the same as a 165 after being overclocked.
