Well apparently it varies by bike manufacturer and what you want/how you want to sit on the bike.
Can you not go to a local shop and just try some bikes, and gauge from that? Then you can go and order online.

I'm 5'11" and I ride a 56cm in a road bike. I have a 100mm stem on both my roadies and the seatpost is probably a good 120mm out of the seat tube. Oh, and 172.5mm crank arms with regular 700x23c tires.

My road bike was 56CM too, but for my MTB, I like a smaller, more maneuverable frame. Also depends on what type of riding you are doing. I am about 6 feet, and I ride a 17.5" Trek XC hardtail.

Well, since the OP didn't specify and he's 5'10" I assumed he wasn't looking at a mtb with a 21" frame. ;)

Road or mountain? I'm 6'1" and I ride a 17.5" mountain bike. I had a 19" and it was too large for me at times.

Well, Im 5'6" and mine is 52 cm, but its hard to say unless you actaully get yourself fitted at a bike store.

What is your inseam? That is a better judge of what size frame you need than just your overall height. It really depends what the proportion of your torso to your legs is. FWIW I'm 6' and my frame sizes are all over the place.

My Trek MTB is a 19", but it's old mid 90's geometry.
My Jamis MTB is a 17" with an 80mm fork; it's a little small and that's how I like it.
My Trek touring bike is a 19", and so is my cross bike.
My GT Road bike was a 54cm (that was too small).

While there are some general rules to bike fit (i.e. a certain inseam should get a certain size MTB frame), they are really only good if you can physically try the frame out. It all becomes moot when you're shopping online because one mfr's 18" could equal another's 21". There is no standard for sizing.

I would say you should try and find a local bike shop that carries the brand you're looking at, and try it out there. Also, see if you can try and negotiate a good price at the LBS. They could use your business during the winter.

Go to a bike shop and get fitted. If your bike shop doesn't have a "fitting" bike, one that is specifically designed to obtain your proper fit, then find another. It's priceless to have a bike that fits.
