Need best freeware to replace Vista's default applications

I may have missed this but I don't think you mentioned it. Are you running 64-bit Vista? Otherwise about half of that 6GB of ram that you're banking on is completely worthless.

Is there a good alternative to vista's backup? Something that you can automatically do it's work, like the original backup. This new version doesn't seem to work over the network (no remote backup destinations)? Also not an image, just be able to do a full backup and incremental daily backup.

I'm sure there are other recommendations but SyncToy works well for me for that purpose. Allows for backups incremental or full and you can save to mapped drives. The program doesn't have a built in schedule option however it has documentation on how to setup Windows scheduler to run it on a regular basis.

Installing Windows XP Ntbackup on Windows Vista

edit: you might need to do a little tweaking in the scheduler to get it to run correctly (for example, point it to the correct location of the classic ntbackup), but if I can figure it out, anyone can.
