Alright, so right now I am going to a 4 year university, UW-M. I like it here, but I think I am finding out that the 4 year university thing is just not for me.

All that goes on here are kids wanting to get drunk and party. And while I don't mind the occasional drink and party, its just not my thing.

I also just can not see myself going through another 2 1/2 years of doing work that will not accumulate to my degree.

Right now I am going for a 4 year degree in Management Information Systems. It is always what I have wanted to do and is still what I want to do. Currently I work on the Geek Squad about 25 hours a week and I commute to college, so I am in a sense getting career experience.

I just want to get out of school as fast as possible and get into the working world. I love working... school on the other hand not so much.

So here comes my question. There are a number of Tech schools around here (Milwaukee Area Tech College is what I am looking at) that are offering 2 year degrees as network specialists / security specialists, which is exactly what I want to do, pretty much the same as MIS, without the BS of not touching my degree classes for another 2 years.

Do you think I should transfer to a Tech college after the Spring semester? What do you guys think? It would really help to get some input from people out there in the field that have gone through this already, and that's where you guys come in handy :p.

Cliff's

1. Discovered 4 year university is not my thing
2. Contemplating on going to a Tech school instead, so I can get into the working world, which I like much more.
3. Looking for input on this from people in the field, on the whole 2 yr vs 4 yr degree in Tech related fields, and what I should do.

I decided the same thing but I decided after that, that I could make myself suffer through 3 more years for the financial stability a degree would give me. My advice would be get a 4 year degree nomatter what. Its basically the new highschool degree. Unless yorue some kind of savant or have some amazing contacts it will be very hard to make it w/o one.

Upward mobility will usually require a 4 yr degree.

Stay in college. No one is requriing you to go out and get drunk. Find some new friends or just don't get drunk/drink if you don't want to. Part of growing up is to make decisions for yourself and not because of peer pressure.

yup like everyone else here I agree. Stay and tough it out, get the 4 year degree.

I don't think EVERYONE there wants to get drunk and party. I think it's the group of people you choose to be around who want to get drunk and party. Find a new group of friends or find friends who respect that you want to spend your money at school wisely.

I went to one of those tech schools. And I can honestly say it's the biggest waste of my money. I was ripped off big time, but I learned from the experience. I'll be going back to finish a 4 year degree.

All I'm saying stick it out and hang in there. I didn't like the BS general ed classes, but get those out of the way during the first or second year then it's smooth sailing.

Thanks for the advice. To what it sounds, I will be staying at a 4 year college. I had a talk with my parents, and a few people I know in the field already, and they all said the same thing.

I just have to realise that after 2 years, I will start getting to the classes I like. I actually got accepted into an honors Intro to Unix program, so hopefully that will intrigue me further.

Thanks for the input!

MIS and what the 2 year tech schools offer are NOT the same thing. Sounds like you're staying in school. That's the correct choice. =) GL to you.

You're doing work that won't go toward your degree? Uhhh... what? Why don't you try doing work that WILL go toward your degree? Check your academic catalogue for courses that you need to take in order to graduate and just take those if you want to leave college so badly. What everyone else does is their own business, who cares if some other college students just drink and party all the time? That shouldn't effect you.
