Need assitance with 19in CRT Monitor selection

I know this question likes to be asked a lot and I've been searching all the old threads but still cant come to a decision. Buying a monitor without seeing them first is a bit of a leap of faith and I'm trying to make the best choice from everyone's opinion that has seen some of these monitors in action.

My budget is around $350 shipped max. I definetely want a flat screen CRT and perfer on that can do 85hz in 1600x1200. The monitors i listed in the poll all do this but im sure there are at least a few other 19in CRTs in my pricerange that also support that. The LG Flatron appears to be a few years old and the only place i can find still selling them is J&R and have been reading some bad things about thier shipping and instock availability on reselleringratings.com so I'm just a little bit leary of that but will take the chance if its a good monitor. The LG Flatron almost seems to good to be true in my eyes.

Heres some links to the monitors from the poll:

Viewsonic p95f+
Mitsubishi DP903SB
LG Flatron 915FT Plus
Samsung 997DF

Please list any other monitors you guys recommend.

BTW if any of the Anandtech staff is reading, you guys need to do some more monitor reviews! 19in CRT Shootout would be good right about now.

EDIT: Added Samsung 997DF

that 997df looks like one sexy monitor but it only does 75hz at 1600x1200. is it that good otherwise to make up for it comapared to other monitors in this pricerange?

Also do DynaFlat tubes have the 2 horizontal lines going across the screen? i think the viewsonic and mitsubishi both have this but the flatron does not.

does not have the 2 lines-those are aperature grille screens-the diamondtron does have that. Quite honestly sometimes I feel that this monitor doesn't look truly flat, but it is very unnoticeable in my opinion as the edges are very slightly curved. But for price/performance, I can't see anything better unless you get a refurb dell (rebadged sony), only thing is those are apertaure grille, but still very good. If you need any help tek, just PM me.

anyone ever see the flatron? Really looking for more opinions on that one.

I had one awhile back before I upgraded to LCD,it was the LG 915 FT PLus model, the screen is dead flat both the outer and inner glass, however because of this you get a very slightly concave image due to the optical illusion of the glass,if you look for the Samsung dynaflat diagram info, you`ll see the inner glass corrects this.

Image quality ,text was pretty good, however I think you are better going for the new Samsung model, the LG model is getting dated now.

Shadow mask wise I would also put the new CTX EX951F model & ImageQuest Q995S on the short-list.

The dampers wires(those two AG wires) are found on both Trinitron and Diamondtron monitors, shadow mask tubes don`t have those AG wires.

LG flatron uses flat slot technology, to put it simple it`s sort of between the two types above but has no AG wires.

Btw if you can live with those 2 AG wires on Diamondtron and Trinitron tubes then you are getting the best monitor for colour, since colour quality on Diamontron and Trinitron tubes are regarded as the best available..

The viewsonic and mitsu/NEC are identical using NECs tube. The rest are garbage hence thier cheap price..

not true, The 95+ does use the stock diamondtron tube which is .25-.27dp and not a true flat tube and uses a 3 gun focus.
930sb uses the top model diamondtron tube which is the diamondtron nf. Totally flat tube, .24dp, mitsubishi's u-nx 1 gun focus.

I forgot to say if you`re going for a Diamondtron/Trinitron type monitor then the Mitsubishi DP9030SB that`s on your short list is my choice,I would also put the IIYAMA Vision Master Pro 454/455 models on there as well.

I actually bought 2 of the Samsung's for $200 a piece, and I'm immensely happy with them for the money. It's a solid monitor, with a low dot pitch, and a GREAT visual image.

That's a pretty ignorant statement, considering Samsung makes high quality 21" monitors. GG 😉

Ok i think i have decided on getting the 930SB from dell.com. they are offering it for $287 w/ free shipping right now, dont think that price can be beat.

Any last minute opinions before i make the plunge?

well i ordered the 930sb from dell. hopefully it makes it here in one piece and its as good as everyone says its going to be 😀

All samsungs suck. I've seen them all. They all use crappy dull/grainy shadow masks. I would'nt touch them with a ten foot pole.

Try this: http://displaysbysony.com/display/model.jsp?pModelId=577

Natually all monitors are subjective.😉

True, such things are subjective. 😉 Of course, MaximumPC recently reviewed that Sony model against NEC 2111FB. Apparently the NEC model produced better text and slightly better images at higher resolutions than the Sony. Shame the F520 was discontinued. But then, how many could afford to spend 1600-1800 on a monitor?

Tekviper, good choice on the 930SB. Let us know how it works out.

Cheers

MrPabulum,

I said at least a hundred times monitors should always be bought local, if only for the RMA aspect once you get it home and don't really like it. But also so UPS guy does'nt screw up your guns while it's rolling aound in the back of his truck. Finally there are huge differencees in the way AG vs shadows look. People swear by each technology... throw LCD in the mix and IMO it's irresponible to recommend any monitor.

BUT of the AG's for less than $300 the DP903SB can't be beat.

Zebo,

Fair point. One could only recommend from each group of monitors, i.e. shadow-mask, invar, AG, or even LCD. In Tekviper's case, as the poll reflects, he was looking at AGs and one invar shadow mask. If the poll included LCDs, than people would have responded accordingly. I hear you on the subjective aspect of choosing a monitor. My shadow-mask Samsung 950P was much better than the 1100DF, and that's certainly just my opinion. Still, it is possible to objectively review a group of monitors using uniform testing procedures, so long as they are of similar technology 😀

Cheers,

Well the 930sb was delivered today, and i am really impressed with this monitor. The colors are very bright and vidid. the flat screen produces pretty much zero glare. everything is very sharp, geometry is very close to a near perfect rectangle. Only problems i can see so far is color convergence in the corners isnt as exact as it is in the middle, but you can only notice it barely on a test screen; during actual use you cant tell it at all.

The naviset software is amazing, its the greatest thing i have ever seen. really makes fine tuning the display very easy, no messing around with on screen controls, you can do it all right in windows. very good feature.

anyway overall, great monitor. im very happy with my choice. thanks for the suggestions!

Any of those monitors should be great except the Viewsonic. If you like reading text, do NOT get the Viewsonic - text looks like crap on that monitor.

I see you've made your decision and you chose the Mitsubishi - good choice.
