Hi everyone,
I am experiencing a rather frustrating computer issue at the moment. Several months ago, I built a new system and had to RMA many of the components in a futile attempt to get the thing to POST. I finally did get the machine in working order. But after a few weeks, my hard drive suddenly started taking 5 minutes to load Windows Vista. It would go through the usual bar and then sit at a black screen before finally loading. Upon loading into windows, my DVD-RW drive stopped detecting discs and any attempt to select it would cause 'my computer' to stop responding. Additionally, IE7 would crash repeatedly and most programs would not work.
Here is what I have tried so far:
-mem test (memory is fine)
-processor tested and is fine
-video card is fine
-no burn marks or indications of mobo short
-swapped hard drives multiple times
-flashed the bios
-checked and swapped all cables
-reseated all components
-reformatted windows (which solved the problem temporarily, but now it only gives me half a day before relapsing into HD annoyingness)
-tried booting with only a few parts
-POST goes fine
-HD Tune reports no bad sectors
-DVD drive is set as a slave
-tried swapping SATA ports
-checked for IRQ conflicts
-swapped surge protectors and outlet
-checked event viewer for issues. (detects CD-drive with bad blocks and some ACPI bios quirks)
The hard drive issue is the only one I currently have. I have not seen any BSODs, random reboots, lock-ups, freezing or decreased system performance in games or otherwise. System stability seems fine until the hard drive takes a dump on me.
I have read online that the power supply may be to blame, but I have not tested it with a DMM unit because I am new to the process and fear getting shocked while doing so. Am I on the right track? Could something else be causing the problem? Any help would be appreciated and I'd be in your debt.
P.S. I have also ruled out overheating as a potential cause.
My system specs are:
AM2 6000+ dual core 3.0ghz
2GB DDR2 6400 Corsair XMS
Gigabyte GA-M57-SLI-s4 mobo
have tried multiple drives, but current is WD 80 gb (from an old raid array)
Lite-On DVD-RW drive
Rosewill Extreme 780 watt psu (4x 12v Rail: combined Amps=60)
BFG Tech 8800 GTS 640 MB pci-E vcard
Lian Li aluminum full ATX case
-USB keyboard and mouse
-USB headset in place of old Creative X-Fi extreme music
Thanks again!
*edit* EasyTune5 shows a VcoreA of 1.420, a +3.3V of 3.310, a +12V of 12.110 and a Cpu Vid of 1.350. The 3.3v and 12v fluctuate a bit, not not by a significant amount. A standard drop for the 3.3 and 12V might be 3.290 on 3.3. and 12.040 from 12.110 on the 12V.
