Need app for dummies to resize digital pictures - batch-able?

My dad just got a digital camera, he takes tons of pics and then wants to email them to people, but the pics are 200K a piece or bigger and he wants to send like 30 pics in one email, what is the EASIEST way he can resize say 50 pics at once to 1024x768 or whatever resolution he wants? I'd like him to be able to retain the high res versions, etc.

Does he have Win XP?
If so, download the XP power tools from the MS website and it adds a Resize function. All you have to do is right-click on a picture file and select resize. It lets you pick then from several different sizes. I use it all the time when I'm going to email pictures. All my digital pictures are taken on the camera's highest quality settings(Large, Superfine on my Canon S45) so they are always at least 1 MB each in size. I can't remember if you can do it with more than one file at a time though. But when I resize my pics to a 640x480 jpeg for emailing, they end up being about 30k.

EDIT: The nice thing about the XP resizer is that you don't have to run a separate app just to resize pictures. All it takes is a right-click on a file name.

Yeah, that MS Powertoy is nice... simple and free. You can do multiple files. Just select what files you want resized and right-click on them. You can choose the size of the output pictures too.

Oh yeah, and it doesn't replace the original pictures. Creates a new file called "filename (resized).jpg" or something.

The XP tool mentioned, if available (i.e. if dear old dad has XP) is the most brainless solution; it should certainly do the job as you have described it. For something more advanced, I also recommend Irfanview.

You can check the box to make it replace the original file 🙂

If he's running Windows XP, he can also just highlight the pictures he wants to send, right-click and go to Send To -> Email recipient, and it will ask you if you want them resized. 🙂

Otherwise, the XP Powertoys plugin is great too 🙂
