Can anyone recommend an anti-virus program that will run on Windows 2000 server that doesn't cost a billion dollars?

None of those run in a server envirionment, they simply won't install.
I am currently using Trend ServerProtect as a demo, but they want $600 bucks for the full version!!

I use Kaspersky Antivirus. http://www.kaspersky.com

1. It is available for ANY platform. It can scan Exchange Mailboxes and mail on linux
2. BEST antivirus so far. The only virus properly detected I love you.
3. A lot of nice features. Automatic update (install and forget it). I set up so it sends warning on my cell phone if it finds anything.
4. It will NOT allow stupid user to run infected files under any circumstances.
5. It can monitor if any files were changed using special algorithm.
6. It is WAY faster and more powerful then any other antivirus on the market.
7. Much fatser updates for new type viruses/

Just to make it short for you. I installed it over a year ago on all workstations in our office. NO VIRUSES could spread since then, even though we receive a lot them in the email.

EDIT: NAV2001/2002 simply sucks. Mcafee is better but not as good as AVP.
Real world example: Sircam. Mcaffe couldn't detect or stop it (we have it on our campus, so I can compare). AVP detected it and protected my users from it - no problems.

I am currently using NAV 2001 on my win2k advanced server, works great. Catches all the crap people email me in my email server. It's pretty cheap too. I love the autoupdate feature.

I am not sure how that is. I tried to install the same thing and got the message that it won't install ina server environment, so I'm not sure what's going on. According to the Kaspersky website, their standard product doesn't run on server either, the version that does is still $380...too much.

AVG Antivirus will run under Windows 2000 Server. I have it running on my Win2k Advanced Server machine. Oh, and did I mention it is FREE?

However, the real-time protection in the free version only protects your server as if it was a workstation, i.e., it checks files and stuff downloaded or opened locally, not those opened over the network. So to be fully protected all you have to do is install AVG on every machine on the network. Which would still be free.

They also have a server version, but it is not free.

From what I've heard AVG has alot of problems and is not a good choice for serious protection.

I'm a big fan of Sophos. I always used NAV or Computer Associates, but I don't like their stance on Magic Lantern...

What kind of problems? All the reviews and actual tests I could find rank it on par with any other program. Always in the top half of performers, anyway. Which is better than a lot of expensive programs. You'd think someone looking for a cheap solution would at least want to know the facts (vs. BS stories) before dismissing a free answer.

I guess if you want "serious" protection you should be willing to spend "serious" money ;)

Well, you still haven't said why AVG won't work for you - at least no reasons based on facts. At any rate, I'm sure it's better than nothing! And won't cost a penny to try, while you are deciding whether it is good or not.

AVG had terrible ratings on cnet, thats what I am basing my opinion on. I could be wrong though.

Read THIS and see if you still trust cnet's results! Besides, I wasn't able to find any negative information about AVG anywhere on cnet.

All I know is AVG saved me from the Goner virus a couple days ago (sent from one of my clients who is running Norton, by the way), and some dillhole sent me the Hybris virus last night and AVG caught that, too.

Now I don't work for them or anything, but when I see a good product that is free I like to tell people about it. I don't understand what you are holding out for, earthman - you say all the big players are too expensive, but instead of trying a free solution you will go without any protection at all while you wait fruitlessly for them to lower their prices?

Actually it was the user reviews I was looking at. A lot of people seemed to have problems with it.

No problems here with AVG. works good for the local machines. But for network antivirus protect you got to pay. Your time and your clients time is worth more, no matter who you are. Goods are cheap and expendable, people aren't.
