Need an upgrade

Ok, here's my situation. I haven't upgraded in a while, but I managed to end up with a little cash, so I decided I'd better do it while I can. I've got about $700 to get as much as I can, with as good an upgrade path for the future as I can. It's been a while since I've researched hardware, so I'm kind of overwhelmed right now. Just need to get myself pointed to the best few options so that I can read up on those and figure out which way I need to go. I'm a gamer, so I'm looking for the best gaming bang for my buck, but I want to make sure I can have some sort of upgrade path that doesn't require replacing half my system next time :) Here's what I have:

Athlon XP 3200+
1GB Corsair PC3200 (2x512MB)
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Radeon 9800 Pro:confused:
DiamondMax 300GB 7200RPM SATA
Deskstar 45GB 7200RPM ATA
Thermaltake Butterfly 480W PSU

That's pretty much it. Obviously I'd like to focus on the CPU and Vid card, but that will mean replacing mb, cpu, and probably ram, so I'm not sure what exactly the best option is. Please help! :)

Ok, I've been reading up on the upcoming CPUs and chipsets, and at least now I think I have a handle on all the damn cpu and chipset code names I've been seeing all over the place. I could go to an AM2 setup, maybe one of the low-power ones, and it wouldn't be horribly expensive, but where would I go from there? Then there's the Core Duo setup, which sounds pretty sweet, but I haven't seen any pricing on it yet. How much are the chips/boards going to go for? That seems like the option with the best upgrade path as well, but I haven't found enough good info on it yet.

Anyone got links to good stuff to read up on?
