Served me well for a long time but started stuttering and skewing and smelled like roasted wires after I took it out. I just have 1 gripe that I had to live with.. when I played video's with VLC it would skew to start and especially when I fast forward or rewind.. but apparently that's an nvidia driver issue (right?)

So now time to replace.. is the HD7790 good for me?

I'm a part time gamer (nothing fancy, just rpg's like EQ2, Silkroad Online, Aion - I get only 40 fps with Aion in 1080p)..

so what's a decent upgrade in the $100-170 market.. preferably lower and preferably ATI.

I think the card you have picked is an excellent choice & a great VFM option so take a look at these & see if you like any of'em ~

Your PSU? If you have adequate watts I'm going to recommend the HD 7950 for just a few more bucks than your budget.

Edit: it looks like they went back up, so can you swing the 270x? Or if you can wait the 7950 might dip down again. Imo, the 7950 is AMD's best card this gen and there is a nice guide on them just a few threads down.

7850 is a excellent card,i miss mine. Cool and overall very quiet if you pick the right model. I had the Msi TF3 2gb model.

At the low end the most interesting is the 260X, assuming
it can be bought at good price, it has TrueAudio wich should be
an interesting feature if effectively used by next games updates.

The 7790 is about 60 percent faster than a GTX260. With your system, you can take a higher-end card. I'd suggest the HD7870, which is an excellent deal at around $150AR on sale. It's 20% faster than the similarly-priced HD7850.

That being said, the 7790 has been on sale for as low as $80 recently, which makes it a steal. Just don't pay retail for it.

All within the past month:
7790 - $80 AR
7850 - $110 AR
7950 - $160 AR

If you can swing it, the 7950 at $180 or less would be the best bang for the buck. If not, wait for a 7850 or 7870 in the low $100s. I wouldn't recommend the 7790 unless you can pick one up for $80 or cheaper, and you have a strict budget.

I am in the same position wanting to upgrade my GTX260 sp216.

I am thinking of either a 7850 2gb or 7870 2gb or GTX660 2gb.

I am leaning towards the 660.

such a tough choice.

Keep in mind...

I have GTX 770 in SLI set-up wih i5-4670K, and yet still get 40FPS in crowded areas. I can never get 60FPS flat without having to turn off the characters.
