I recently bought a Thinkpad x61s laptop with the x6 ultrabase.

Can anyone recommend a dual layer DVD burner for this setup? I checked Lenovo Website,
but it doesn't seem to be very descriptive in terms of upgrade options.

Apparently, the Lenovo/IBM laptops use a smaller form factor drive than most other laptops. (Ultra-slim vs slim)

Additionally, it looks like Lenovo is going to be discontinuing the drive I thought about purchasing. (Model 41N8458)

If someone can recommend a drive, please let me know. I want to keep it an internal drive if possible.

Thanks,

-Matt

I wonder what happened to Corkyg? He knows too much about Thinkpad...where is he now?

Ha, ha! I am on a vacation (freezing my butt off) in New Orleans.

I have my T60 with me, and can tell you that the DVD burner player does fit into an Ultrabay adapter. According to "Safely Remove Hardware" the drive is a Matsushita (Panasonic) UJ-842.

I don't knoiw if the X61 even has a bay for it.

Google prowlings suggest that LG makes one in the same form factor - LG GSA-8043N.

The same drives are also used in some Sony laptops.

Thanks a bunch for the info. I'll good those drives and see what comes of it.

The X61 doesn't have a bay - it's why I bought the x6 Ultrabase.

What stinks is I have a Sony NEC Optiarc 6550A Dual Layer burner that I bought about 2 years ago, but it won't fit into the ultrabay slot. :(

Thanks,

OK - I see the picture. The Ultrabay is in the base - not the Thinkpad. You should be able to get that drive. Try E-Bay for sure. I also suggest you consider the Ultrabay adapter for an extra SATA HDD. I swap these as needed. On the left is the adapter with a 2nd HDD, and on the right is the Ultrabay DVD drive.
