Need an SSD / Questions

Third generation Intel and Sandforce drives are comming out early next year. A huge boost in performance is expected with the SF drives, and probably all SSDs will drop in price by a large margin.

Most (not all) games don't benefit much from an SSD over a fast HDD.

40 to 60Gb Intel and SF drive are selling for around $100, and will greatly increase system speed with only the OS and programs on the SSD.

Due to the above facts, perhaps it makes sence to buy a small SSD now, and also a single platter-single head 320Gb Samsung F4 for about $45. By putting your OS and programs on the SSD, and putting your games on the first 30 to 60Gb of the F4, you could have a huge speed improvement now for a small investment. You could then buy a much better/bigger SSD later when the prices come down, and performance goes up.

i think you should consider in this fashion after making sure that ssd is really what you need:

1) sequential or random access priority?
2) choose a controller (intel, indilinx, sandforce) based on (1)
3) choose a capacity
4) imo, aim for $1.75 to $2/gb for a deal

also, i've noticed some funny stuff happens at the lower capacity (30-60gb) drives. using crystal mark, the numbers are significantly lower. i think they do something to the memory controller.

regarding your choice, do you need the 2.5" one? there's a 3.5" one for $185. seems the same everything else. might want to double check though.

Thanks! Yes, I would rather save the money and use the 3.5" drive. It's cheaper.

This is going to be the OS drive + some programs, etc. I have a 120GB 10k Raptor right now and I'm using about 75GB of it.

wouldn't the drive come with appropriate cables? i have a bunch of regular sata cables anyway.. can I not use those? am i missing something?
