Need an Overclocking 101 lesson for my new Intel build

Just put together an i7-based system after going with AMD for many years. I did some light OC'ing with other computers before but never pushed too hard because the advanced practices/terminology just seemed to go over my head every time I tried to understand it. So I'm hoping one of you guys could lay it all out for me this time around so I can learn as I go along.

I guess the main questions I have involving this are if I should be increasing my stock FSB from 100mhz to something higher so it matches my RAM speed. When researching in the past I use to hear people talk about getting a 1:1 ratio, well right now I'm at 1:6 according to CPUZ (which doesn't make sense to me, my RAM is DDR3 running @ 1600, so wouldn't that be 100: (1600/2) = 1:8?) with this setup, so to get 1:1 I'd obviously have some adjusting to do, but what do I adjust? I know I read somewhere that upping the FSB over 100 is not advised, but except for underclocking the RAM frequency to match it what else is there? I'm probably missing something obvious here, can someone educate me?

Not much room for FSB overclocking anymore with Intel but is dependant on platform. S1155 for example maybe 105 or so depending on CPU/MB.

Most just run 100 and set memory to spec.

1:1 only matters on LGA775 since the NB controlled memory. With the new IMC's it doesnt matter. Dont change your FSB since it pretty hard to get one over 5mhz of stock, raise the multi to 45x and put voltage at 1.3 (offset) and see what she can do from there.

I see, thanks. Right now I'm doing 48x at just under 1.4v with Prime95 running for an hour, is it safe to keep upping the multiplier at this voltage to try for 5ghz?

Also, I'm even more clueless when it comes to OC'ing RAM. I have a set of 2x4GB G-Skill Ripjaws in dual channel, CPU-Z says the latencies are 11-11-11-30 or something like that, but they're advertised to run 9-9-9-24 @ 1.5v, I'm guessing I have to manually set the timings to get to these numbers? Couldn't really find where to do that on the UEFI BIOS this board has.

Up it and see. Just.keep an eye on temps tho. Something that hits with AVX estensions may be better and quicker to test with. Latest Intel Burn test hits very hard. Will also give worst case senario temps.

You'll have to set up your ram I'm not familiar.with msi BIOS tho....Maybe best.to leave timings loose for now till you figure out your CPU overclock.
