Need an MP3 player

I sold my iPod 4G because the HD got the click of death and I was going to replace it with my Walkman phone. Of course those aren't that satisfying, and I see no point in buying a 4gb MS Pro Duo card to upgrade especially when I'm getting a new SE phone that uses Micro M2 sometime later this year.

So I figure I need an MP3 player back especially when my audio collection is roughly 20GB. I liked the iPod, and I swear I don't buy it because it's a sexy piece of hardware and I think the device rocks. I have complaints about the 5G and 5.5G with the colors and interface being a LOT slower than the old 4G one. However, I think the click/wheel interface coupled with the small form factor of the ipods make it truly a worthwhile device.

I bought a pair of UE Superfi 5Pros recently and I'm unsatisfied with my phone's SQ clearly. Even with my Sony fontopias I could tell the phone was a POS, but since the earbuds weren't that great I was able to stand that SQ. Now the noise is just unbearable that I have to attach the attenuator (which kills highs and low impact) which doesn't make the experience that great anymore.

So I'm shopping for an MP3 player that's got good SQ. I've heard some nice things about the 6G IPods and their SQ and improvements over the past. I took a test run with my friend's 1G Nano and some Shure e3cs and I wasn't too impressed. Part of it was definitely due to the low bass of the e3cs, but I'm sure the 1G Nanos aren't that great in SQ either. So what does AT think?

What format is your music stored in? If you bought stuff off iTunes, you're pretty much stuck with an iPod (unless it was DRM-free, I guess).

Most of my songs are MP3. My FLAC collection is small, and so I don't mind if ipods don't support it although rockbox can open nice doors. I've bought like 5 songs off iTunes which I don't even care about anymore because they're long lost.

Do you care about memory size? If it can play video? Also, what's your budget?

The new Sansa View is comig out in a couple of weeks, 8gb or 16gb with expandable memory. I was looking at that until I got a free Ipod Nano. I still may get it and give the Ipod to my wife.

The Sansa mp3's are supposed to be sweet, and a great deal. Thinking about one for myself.

The new Zen is really nice, 16 gigs and expandable. SD support isn't great, but it'll eventually get better though firmware updates. Edit: I completely forgot about the Kenwood 30gb player from Bluetin. Superb headphone out, but no video or audio.
