I'm looking for a new mp3 player that has the ability to quickly fast forward through a 3-4 hour clip in several seconds. I listen to a lot of recorded talk radio and sometimes I need to jump ahead quickly, unfortunately my Creative Labs player died on me (screen went dark and then black) and my Sansa player fast forwards v.....e......r......y slowly. Anyway I'm lookung for suggestions on a reliable mp3 player with a good fast forward.

Also I highly advise anyone to avoid Creative Lab players, I've been through 4 of them so far. I'm finally giving up on the company, they're quality control is lacking. They come up with nice designs and ideas but the quality of their product is severely lacking.

I don't know how much you are planning on spending, but the iPod Touch has a feature that lets you skip to anywhere in the file by dragging the bar.

iPods with the click wheel let you skim through the current track pretty much as quickly as you want.

As others have said the iPods are pretty good. The longer you hold fast forward, the faster it forwards.

Something that might be easier for you would be to take what your listening to and set "checkpoints" (I think some players actually come with this as a feature where, maybe they call it setting bookmarks), which allows you to use the next track function to sections. This might also be functionality that Rockbox could offer for your current Sansa.

The flash based ones are much more durable than the HD based ones. I have a 1g nano which I like, I think they make them up to 16gb now.

yea just get a screen protector and a silicon skin, if ur cheap you can always get the bestskinsever do it yourself sheet since its just for the screen area.
small flash players are also durable because they are so light...i drop them and they tend to hang on the plug instead of popping off:p

If you want a non Apple suggestion.

The 80GB zune can instantly jump in like quarter length increments (swipe the touch pad) and can fast forward (push an hold respective direction) completely though ~30 min in <15sec.

I listen to a lot of podcasts and the resume feature is really nice, not that its an exclusive feature. My older Rio would only pick up where left off if I didnt change the track. With the Zune I can get halfway though a podcast, stop it, watch a video\another podcast\music and then choose to pick up where I left off on the original podcast.
