Need an informed opinion!

Folks, I'm currently running an AMD K6-2 400Mhz@411Mhz with 256MB of RAM. The video card is an ATI Pro Turbo Rage II Mach 64 w/8MB of RAM and Rainbow6 is running very slow. On my older Compag with 1MB of onboard video I was running an OverDrive 200Mhz w/MMX processsor, 136MB of RAM and an Arcade F/X 3D accelerator w/4MB of RAM and the Rainbow6 performance was much better. My current system does have onboard video(Rage II w/4MB of RAM) but is disabled. Would I get better 3D performance by teaming my onboard video with the accelerator? Can't really afford a new video card right now. Any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks!

I would think so. The Ati probably doesn't have much of a 3d feature set. Is the arcade F/X a Voodo1?

yes, you would get better performance. i don't know anything about rainbow6, but perhaps it is optimized for glide. in which case moving the accelerator will help.

Hey gang, is there a site that I could go to and try to learn a little more about video cards and the differences between stand-alone cards and 3d accelerators? Also, any further advice on my current situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again folks!

Seriously, read through the older video card reviews that Anand has in the archives to start learning about the basics. It is kind of a steep learning curve if you jump into the latest technology right off, start out with the oldest reviews he has listed and post back here with questions you might have, or in General Hardware if you don't have luck getting responses over here.

Rainbow 6 ran fine on my riva128... so a 3Dfx Voodoo-based board should handle it no probs.

get a tnt, voodoo3. DONT GET GEFORCE 2 GTS. THey are VERY CPU dependent.
