I found a few pay sites to download an fdisk utility to add to your bootdisk but don't want to pay. Here's how I'm trying to install...

I am booting with cdrom support, then i want to fdisk and format. Then I want to copy over the I386 folder from my cd to the hard drive. Then you can run the winnt.exe file from I386 folder on your hard drive. I've done this a million times with 98, but the fdisk utility wont partition hard drives larger than like 40 gig or something.

woops, forgot to say this is original winXP, no service packs.

Any help?

The limit is 60 GB using a Win98SE disk for FAT32. MS offered a patched version of fdisk for 98SE but it didn't work for me.

Aside from Acronis Partition Expert, Partition Magic, other commercial apps, most drive manufacturers offer free downloadable disk tools that can format larger drives.

Eh, download the Gentoo minimal installation CD (~60MB) and use its fdisk utility. Or Knoppix...

Edit: to your edit, slipstream XPSP2, boot from CD, you won't even need fdisk. Why do you need it now? XP can partition at least 137GB of the drive. More if you slipstream.

well, as DaveSimmons said, use the drive prep utility available from the manufacturer. Figure out if the drive is maxtor, seagate, western digital and go to their website, and get their drive software for free. ie seagates Seatools, Maxtor's maxblast, or Western digital's data lifeguard tools.

You can partition the the drive from the WinXP Installation CD. Boot from the XP CD, when it comes to the point where it wants you to select what partition to install from you have the option of deleting and creating partitions (up to 138Gb if it's pre SP1).

Why the hell do you want to mess around with FDISK?

If that's not good enough for you, go buy Partition Magic.
