I'd like to have around an emergency soldering kit for when I travel around. Just now, the center pin on my Asus laptop power jack broke off. I can't afford to send the laptop in for repair and have that much downtime. I need to order in a replacement jack and repair it on my own.

What would be a good, compact, lightweight, but effective kit for doing emergency soldering / desoldering work?

Does this have everything I would need?

kit looks alright

i'd throw in a small roll of desoldering wick (works better than the pump) and a piece of 200 or 400 grit sandpaper (for cleaning in a pinch). maybe a container of paste flux too.

Are there cases where desoldering wick is necessary?

i'd rather have it than the pump. the pump will work best where you can get the tube as close to the molten solder as possible. wick can be pressed with the iron tip anywhere you need to remove solder.

Maybe just buy a laptop that doesn't fall apart.

Are you OK with an AC iron? Considered butane?
I would prefer an electric one for easy of getting power.

BUT the one on Amazon is 110V. I travel, so everything needs to be dual voltage 110V / 220V. There doesn't seem to be any cheap irons with dual voltage, replaceable tips, and adjustable heat...

On a plane? Yes. I don't want to buy a bottle of butane just for the very infrequent times I may use an iron.
Yeah, but it's cheap enough to just buy and refill at your destination. The butane iron will run for a good 20 minutes (at least) before needing to be refilled. Not sure about taking it on a plane though.

I wouldn't use any kind of flammable gas. Aside from the plane hassle, he could travel the majority of world, and not easily find gas. I'd buy American electric, than any adapters/converters necessary for travel. Use an inverter for the car.

Try to get some servisol soldamop desoldering wick. It is the best i ever used.
Even on low quality printed circuit boards, the pads do not come loose while cleaning them. I never use force, i just let it glide along. But the cheaper wicks do not have flux in them and are badly weaven. Not soldamop, it is perfect.
2.5mm x 10m (width x length) will serve a few years.
