My parents who do low volume scanning and printing need one.

Its very volume, mainly medical documents and copies of their id cards.

I highly doubt they will need color or a FAX machine.

I need something very low maintenance and easy to use, one button copy would be perfect. They are far from tech savy.

I'm trying to get this in the $100 and under ballpark.

Our old canon mp130 is dead, i loved it because cheap inks. I replaced the ink tank every time I was there because it was like $3-5 a thing of black. But lately I can't get a clean print so its now junk. I see HP has a throw away all in one for $50 ish at Walmart. Not sure if that's the route I want to go. If there was a cheap all in one laser I would love it.

T2urtle,

I would highly recommend they get a all in one B/W laser printer. That way no worries about very expensive ink jet cartridges drying out.

But immediate question, a sheet feed scanner will do a fine job of scanning paper ID cards, but for something stiff and thick, like a drivers license, it going to require a flatbed scanner.

I looked on new egg and found a nice brother 7360 all in one laser that would do your job for about $145 shipped, and maybe better shoppers could find better bargains. Big Box stores sometimes have close out bargains.

But if you want to get such a MFC laser under $100.00, its probably the used market on craigslist or ebay. I got a brother MFC7820N $60.00 shipped that way.

The other thing to say about most MFC lasers, is they usually have very thick and extensive owners manuals and seeming require a PHD to use, but still most operations can be done by one or two buttons. And in the case of my 7820N, I can copy, fax, and scan without even being hooked to a computer.

I would suggest the canon mx410. amazing printer, and you can set it up wireless. This has 1 button scan and copy options to keep it easy for then you can put stickers on the button they will use...

Laser is what I want. But inkjet is what considering.

Those with all in one canon inkjets. How long do those inks last in terms of drying up? I'm not worry about them ever using up all the ink.

Yes a flatbed scanner is what I had and that works best.

My Canon AIO uses third party carts that cost me no more than $5 apiece. I have never[/] had a cart dry up; modern ink jets, if left on, will "exercise" the carts periodically to prevent just such a problem. You do have to use it, though.

^ yea my parents will not follow those instructions. they will turn it off to save power.

I talked to them about the laser printers and now opted to go with a laser and wireless built in all in one. Just a flatbed scanner. With a price wiggle room of $125.

A wireless only B/w Laser printer is substantially cheaper than a equivalent laser all in one printer on the new market. But if you are adventurous and cheap, I have found endless opportunities to buy used quality flatbed scanners at goodwill stores at $10.00 a pop. As for me, I think Canon scanners offer the best reliability and technology. And unless you are enlarging 35MM film or slides, its a waste to assume you need large files sizes and the best available resolution.

for their purposes, i dont need anything high end.

Its just documents and ID cards. Yea a scanner and a laser printer would be IDEAL! but I dont think i can tech my parents the functions of scanning something and then sending it to print. Older parents aren't exactly super tech savy.

ive seen brand new scanners in the $50 range, i could give them a HL2270 i have somewhat collecting dust.

I think i rather pay up front for an allinone and hope no headaches come from it.
