Need an AGP gaming card that supports SM 3.0, while at the same time, supporting W98

Pissed at myself for not having the money to order the VisionTek X1950Pro AGP 256MB card that Newegg had recently for $70, now they're OOS and deactivated.

Was looking to upgrade my ageing X850Pro AGP card that's in my older C2D AGP multi-boot box. It runs Win98se, W2K, and XP. Cannot play latest games under XP, because the X850Pro is only SM 2.0b, not SM 3.0.

But want to make certain that I can still multi-boot with Win98se with that video card.

Does the X1950Pro AGP have drivers for Win98se? Did it ever? Maybe I can still pick one up off of FS/FT or something.

The last ATI card with Windows 98 support was the Radeon X850 XT with the Catalyst 6.2 drivers. The Radeon X850 XT did a little better than the GeForce 7600 GT in the charts. However the GeForce 7600 is not Windows 98 compatible. I also wanted to build a Windows 98 machine. I also would suggest staying away from nForce 4 chipset on the motherboard, as there is no Widnows 98 support either. Hope that helps

So it looks like I'm stuck with the X850Pro then, for the time being.

I might just take my old multiboot box and virtualize it.

I don't know about ATI/AMD but the last nVidia cards to support Win98 were the Geforce 6 series 4 years ago. Amazingly you can still buy slower Geforce 6 series AGP cards but you'd be better off getting a used 6600GT off of eBay.

Actually, it looks like the ATI X1950 supported SM 3.0 but did not support W98SE. Any reason why you have to have W98? It used a completely different driver model than 2K/XP.

are you OK with Nvidia?

you can use 6X00 series cards with the last Win98 forceware drivers (81.98)

I bought a 6600GT on craigslist for $10. ATi also has agp hotfix drivers but I don't know which work with Win98
