The X1800xtx and the 7800gtx are direct competitiors, both being flagship cards. the X1800xt was a step between 7800gt and 7800gtx, but imn price it was very close to the 7800gt a short while after launch(within $20-30). Furthermore, most launch benchies shoed the x1800xtx was comparable to the 7900gtx but in many cases at higher resolutions, it pulled ahead(rare since msot sites do not bench at 20x15).

Nividia engineers came out andsaid the 7800gtx was engineered from the ground up to be more geared toward higher resolutions like 20x15 and that the archichtecture of the G70 was markedly improved for handling over 16x12 resolution compared to the NV40.

ATI engineers stated that the X1800xt(x) was optomized for a 1600x1200 gaming exprience.

and the 7800gtx wins in that benchmark at 1600*1200 too
