Need an AGP card - quick

My old Leadtek GF3ti500 just died, and I would like to still have some use for the machine. Problem is, it's got an AGP port and the market for AGP is obviously dry these days.

Any reccomendations? I would like to get the best gaming card out there (in a sub-$200 price range) if I'm going to be buying anything.

Any suggestions would be great. 🙂

 
I'd rather wait for the agp version of the 7600gt to show up. Its retailing for about $190 in the UK. It runs cooler and is faster than the stock 7800gs.

I knew I should have hoarded AGP cards when I had the chance. I could have made a killing on the FS/T forum and ebay.
Now they're gone. :|

 
The 7600gt is not faster than a stock 7800gs. Also the 7600gt's as far as I can tell are not good overclockers. My 7800gs overclocks past 7800gtx speed, and most can overclock to at least 450,1.35,which is 7800gtx speed.I'd pay 15$ more for the increase in speed anyday. The bechmarks you see are 7800gs's at 375,1.25. at this clock speed the 7600gt ties or just beats it in some benchmarks.

7600gt vs 7800gs both overclocked the 7600gt gets smoked http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?id=2031&cid=3&pg=9
and thats with a 3.0 pent 4. I bet with a faster cpu it's even faster.

And thats a small overclock for the 7800gs in my opinion
Conclusion 205.00$ for 7800gs winner!

Be careful with what AGP product you choose. There are a couple of slot variants, and they are not all compatible. There is 2X, 4X, and 8X AGB, and they involve different voltages.

I just worked on a client's machine - an old Asus K7M mobo - and it was one of the first AGPs. The current two segment fingered cards will not work. It has to be 3 segments, and the choices are limited.

The best I could find was a Radeon 9250 AGP 4X/8X, a 3 segment insertion fingers - on sale for $39 including two rebates.

It worked! The XT1300 I had as a spare would not fit. It has a 2 segment AGP fingers.

Problem with that theory is that the new 7600GT costs $30 less than the refurb 7800GS and the new X800 XT costs $55 less. All the reviews show the 7600GT performing the same or better than the 7800GS at defaults. Perhaps the 7800GS does overclock better but clubic managed more of an overclock than hardwarezone on the 7600GT. The X800 XT certainly overclocks well so I don't see a refurb 7800GS at that price being the winner in performance and indubitably not in price/performance.

Well you're wrong. I never mentioned overclocking and clearly mentioned - stock. You own link clearly shows the stock 7800gs being slower than the stock 7600gt. I agree that the 7800gs is a stellar overclocker. But at its price as Auric says, its poor value for money.

Show me a link for the 7600gt AGP at 175.00$ and the x850xtPE AGP at 150.00$
X850xtpe dosen't support sm3. Try to run 3d mark o6 with one. (old technology).
In comparison 7600gt is the 6600gt and the 7800gs is the 6800 (remember that argument)?. When in higher resolutions with a fast cpu (not a 3.0 pent 4), and overclock to overclock the the 6800 and 7800gs are stronger chips and worth the extra money (30 bucks) in my opinion.but not at the 275.00$ most venders are charging.

 
I wrote XT not XT PE: X800 XT AIW $155 shipped and 7600 GT $179 shipped.

There have also been recent deals on the X800 XL for $120 and X800 XL AIW (actually XT core) for cheap but I don't recall the price.

The importance of SM3 is debatable and the benchmarks speak more than model numbers since there is overlap from one generation to the next. But the 7800GS is the low-end of that series whereas the 6800GT was the high-end. Since the 7800GS is relatively expensive to make with little to no performance benefit it will be phased out in favour of the 7600GT. The 6600GT likewise supplanted the low-end 6800.

It is still pricey at $213 for a refurb and I'm sure those other cards could be had for less used as well -except for the recent 7600GT although that will surely come down with more competition. Maybe if they can plop a 79xx core in the same board design as the 7800GS we will get that option in AGP too (dunno if the Gaywad card was a special design).

'nutha thing to consider is nVidia's inflated performance at driver defaults (up to 30%) as BFG10K noted in another thread which could make the X800 XT an even better value.

x800xt is much slower than the 7800gs
The x850xtpe is the one they compare it to.(7800gs)😉

1440x900 and 1280x1024 (2 different lcds).

At that resolution, that card should work great. It should be able to handle 1280x1024 fine too. That's gonna be a HUGE upgrade from that old Ti500. HAVE FUN!!!
