the notebook is a Dell Latitude D600 and came with 20gb - i need to upgrade it for someone else but i get to choose with what. i'm not very knowledgeable about notebooks so i don't know what kind of RPM or cache size is needed to be quiet and fast. the upgrade is for more space and because the notebook has been having slowdowns which i assume is from the HD being almost completely full and because i've done various other scans which turned up nothing - the RAM and CPU aren't being taxed either.

the HD is (according to dell) a 20gb 4200 RPM IBM HD. i was thinking a nice 80gb 5400RPM 8mb drive to replace it like this WD, but that one year warranty worries me. any thoughts, suggestions?

and price matters.

whichever 80gb 5400 rpm drive you can find for the cheapest will do. If you want a long warranty, go seagate.
Avoid toshiba, because they tend to die real fast.

I swapped out my 40gb Hitachi 5400rpm drive in my T41 for a 100gb Hitachi 7200rpm. HUGE difference in speed and yet still VERY quiet. I love the Hitachi drives, they haven't let me down yet.

BTW, make sure to pull the drive once and check the specs... On both my Dell and my IBM, specs sheet showed a 4200rpm yet i actually had a 5400 inside.

budget would be around $150 IMO, but only because i'd rather save this guy some cash. 7200rpm worries me a bit because of the power usage though, but maybe it'll work better if/when full compared to slower drives?

anyway, thanks alot for all the links. it's definitely between one of the 80gb hitachi's for me.

80gb 7200rpm Hitachi :)

The speed difference from my 5400 -> 7200 was very noticable, i can only imagine 4200 -> 7200

Edit: guess it would have been easier to edit my posts, but oh well... too late now :D

enjoy!

I went from a 30GB 2MB 4200 > 60GB 8MB 7200. The difference is like day and night. Feels maybe 2-3 times as fast.
