I'm trying to put together a system for my parents, who need a box for every day use (web stuff, financial stuff, etc..etc..)

I just picked up an XP1600 and a stick of Crucial 256MB DDR PC2100.... now I need a board to put this in. There will be no overclocking, the main goal is stability. I don't ever want this baby to crash. Also, i'm not afraid to use an older board that's proven itself, as again performance isn't my main concern. I'd like to stay around or below the ~$80.00 mark. Thanks!

I was checking out the Epox 8K3EA ... but that was only because I ran into a few rants and raves (but not sure that it's because it's a good overclockers brand)

Any suggestions??

The MSI 745 Ultra board is a wery good choise. At decent performance and rock stable (you can forget the VIA PCI transfer problems, the IRQ sharing problems and the stuttering problems). The only thing you need to install is the SiS AGP driver.(No more Via 4 in 1's). It is rock stable as I said and it is cheap as well as a real good overclocker(in case you change your mind). Anyways, don't buy the ASUS A7S333, as the bios to that board is full of bugs and problems. The board also has low performance. The SiS 745 chipset is better than the KT266A chipset and better than the KT333, if you run it at 166mhz FSB and MEM as I do.

Anyways, most boards on the market are good, but if you want quality at low cost, the MSI 745 Ultra won't let you down.

Cheers!

I would look at the Biostar M7VIQ LOOK HERE

It has Video, sound, Lan, and USB 2.0. It is a KM266 chipset WITH the NEW 8235 southbridge

I think Newegg.com has it for $70

I have had nothing but troubles out of Amd i would recommend Intel motherboard and chipset and proccessor i tried BIOSTAR , ABIT which lasted 7 months and GIGABYTE ga7 vxrp all with Raid built on them JUNK !!!! Then when you get them Warrantied you get a refurbished board plus shipping and hndling hassles . I have 5 Intel Machines 3 are 4 yrs are older @ my buisness VERY SOLID . You do not have to worry about over heating or dozens of Via patches that do not do much good . Good luck on your system !!

Just because you don't know how to build a computer does not mean everybody else is the same.

I have used VIA and AMD chipsets and never had a problem and they all run well with in temp. spec.

I am running DUAL Athlons right now and they run cool and 100% stable

Well, being as how Intel is now very much more expensive, at about the same performance (numbering scheme aside) .... AMD has proved it's worth in my expierence. Although I'm not sure which board to go with, as the point of this thread. Everyone has a specific use for their machine, overclocking in this particular instance is not mine.

Still open to suggestions.....

Anyone know how that biostar M7VIQ preforms? stability??

TIA,

It should be a good one. They made one other KM266 board with the older 8233 southbridge, this board just has the newwer southbridge and better power supply system that is usually only on full size boards(3 phase power). So down the line you can put in a AGP card, or pop in a Athlon 2800+ if it is needed.

I had 2 biostar boards 1 one was a dud Second lasted about 6 months Good luck Best thing to do in my opion is go to places like www.newegg.com and read reviews from real users of the products . Some people in these communties work for amd and other hard ware companies so it is hard to get a true reading. it may be a good board i would check out the reviews !! GOOD LUCK !!

my vote is for the Asus A7N266-VM -- $80 shipped free at Newegg.com
I have to agree I have built 2 of these and the mobo is great The only problem is the jummper for the cpu settings a backwards so if you buy it check that. but the mobo is very solid. RickD
