Hello everyone,
my first post, and i want to say: this is a great community where i found lots of useful info. great job everyone, and thanks!
the article on tomshardware about hitting 4G with 805 D sparked my interest in overclocking, but due to budget, i wasnt able to purchase anything until now.
i came across a couple of deals at local Fry's B&M:
- E6400 retail with ECS P4M800-Pro v2
- Corsair ddr2 675 2GB kit (TWIN2X2048-5400c4)
- Maxtor SATA2 320G
threw everything together and result = rock solid with everything at default (resetted CMOS and then load optimized settings, save N exit). CPU-Z detects everything correctly.
however, playing with the ECS board, any tweaking with memory, it will not POST. and changing FSB from 266 to 300 will not be able to pass Orthos (though seems to me that windows XP and applications are working OK)
now i am looking to purchase a MB with the following in mind:
- overclocking (want to at least get 3.2G at 8x400, anything higher is nice bonus)
- using stock HSF and no budget to add cooling solution to NB SB... etc
- got 4 PATA drives i dont want to leave behind...
- i am saving my budget to get Radeon X1950pro, heehee
obvious solution is to wait for the 650i Ultra... but does it even exist? so my choices got narrowed down to TForce 965PT vs GA-965P-S3 vs P5N-E SLi
my questions:
1. any of these 3 boards unable to hit 450Mhz with components i have? 400Mhz?
2. is it better to get P965 + PATA controller or go with 650i?
3. if the concensus is to get 650i, any problem using ATI video card on nVidia chipset?
4. if the concensus is to get P965, is one board favored over the other?
5. any comments/suggestions/advises are appreciated
thanks in advance!
