Dual PIII 500Mhz
or
Dual PII Xeon 450 Mhz

Which is better for gaming?
For general applications?
What are the differences?

Thanks

Neither.
Neither.
One is P3, One is P2 Xeon.

Just kidding - for detail info, check intel spec.
Both system are ok for anything, but not worth the money.

It depends how much L2 cache the Xeon has (512k, 1Meg or 2Meg) and if the p3's are Katmai(512K) or Coppermine(256K).

If the Xeons have 1 or 2 megs og L2 cache, than they should be faster in most situations.

<<well they have to be katmai's because you cant dual the p3 coppermines. i'd take the xeons either way>>

Untrue.

Friend of mine is running a Dual P3 600E@780MHz system with 1GB of ram and a ABit VP6. Works great....

Uhhhh....no 🙂

It is "Celermines" aka Celeron2's that are not able to do dual processing, P3's can do SMP just fine. That is one of the big advantages P3's have over Athlons for right now until the 760MP chipset is widely available and DDR prices drop some.

Anyway, it depends on what you do. For servers or other applications that rely heavily on cache I would go for the PII's if they have 1mb+ of cache. For just about anything else, a P3 of higher mhz rating will perform better.
