Need advice... Should I sell my 640mb GTS?

This is BS... Why screw the GTS owners like this? It just doesn't make any sense... Every GTS owner should get a FREE GT. It's the only way to set things right IMO.

Seriously.... $375 for 640MB GTS and $249 for a GT that wipes the floor with GTS? WTF?

Should I just sell my GTS, buy the GT, and have the $126 left over? lol
It's almost like nVidia is screwing themselves with this one...

I know I cant sell a used GTS for $375, but I'm sure I can sell it, buy a GT and have money left over.... Would it be a good idea to do that? Is there anything SUBSTANTIAL that the GTS still have over GT?

What about nVidia's step up program? Can I try that, provided I got my GTS in early March, I used the rebate, cut out the bar code from the box, and I the only reciept I have is the online printout from newegg confirming my order?

PS: Sorry for making yet another topic concerning this, but I'm dirt poor and I was saving money for the GTS for 4 years in a row. I want to get my money's worth, damnit!

Life ain't fair. Get rid of that card as soon as you can to an ignorant ebay buyer ASAP. Then get yourself an 8800GT. No use whining about the forces of economics and market behavior, the video card industry and computers in general are designed to screw you.

OMFG how dare nvidia release a card slightly more powerful for half the price a year after... Yarr... I are so angry at the fact that I had a good card for a year which is now not as good as the new midrange part...

It's not slightly more powerful. It's A LOT more powerful. I didn't have the card for a year... I had it for only about 8 months!

Oh well... I know what must be done.

640GTS. MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE TO MANUFACTURE IN MANY WAYS:

1. 8800GTS is 90nm. 8800GT is 65nm.
2. 8800GTS is 320bit wide for memory. 8800GT is only 2560bit wide. Cheaper PCB's.
3. 8800GTS you speak of has 640MB GDDR3. 8800GT has 512MB GDDR3. less cost.
4. 8800GTS has NVIO chip externally. 8800GT has it in the core. less cost for PCB traces and separate manufacturing of an IO chip.
5. 8800GTS is 1 year old come November. Always expect year old tech to be replaced with cheaper newer faster tech.
6. 8800GTS has a dual slot cooler. 8800GT has a single slot cooler. Less cost.

I own a 8800GTS 640 and couldn't be happier. Why can't you? It is a powerful card. No complaints. I had mine since April. When did you buy yours? Yesterday? If you did that, then I'd say you have no choice but to lose money when new card releases were imminent and you couldn't wait..
EDIT: OMG, i just saw your second post. You have had the GTS for 8 months now, and have been happily gaming ever since, and now you feel you deserve a free 8800GT? Wow.

You see all the ways the 8800GT could have been made MUCH cheaper than an original 90nm 8800GTS. What's the surprise?

keysplayr2003 I feel the same way and have a Geforce 8800 GTS 320 and still love it. It even does pretty good in Crysis. Not perfect but good enough for now.

I don't see the Geforce 8800 GT doing that much better in Crysis with the settings I want to run at lol. Who doesn't want to run Crysis at 1680x1050 in DX10 all settings on very high, 4x AA , and 16x AF ?

8 months!! Your only mistake is that you didn't buy the GTS 640 sooner. I've had my GTS 640 for nearly a 11 months. No regrets. Perhaps if I bought one Sunday night.. 😛

zomg ever heard of this thing called "progress"?

consider yourself lucky that you had a good run for 8 months, not too long ago ATI and nvidia were on a 3-4 month release schedule, back when there was still competition. imagine buying an X1800 then 2 months later the 7900GTX comes out and kills it, and then 5 months later the X1900 comes out and kills it. so go cry a river please.

Wow thats what we need right now with Crysis!

Yep, but TBH I don't care what ATI releases, because I need multi-GPU with my display, and crossfire is NOT an option. So nvidia better get off their ass and do something.

Wow thats the only thing I hate about having a huge lcd monitor. I wish you didn't have to run at native resolution for it to look best.

Let's start a class-action lawsuit. I'm sure we can get a hold of the lawyers who are handling the iPhone case.

I know, but even 1920x1200 on the 30 inch... makes me wanna vomit. And the 20 fps I am getting make me wanna vomit even more. The only game I can run at 1920x1200 is PES 2008, but #1 that game doesn't go any higher and #2 I play from a further away because I have a controller so it looks mint.

FPS games are played close up and 1920x1200 scaled on a 2560x1600 panel looks like ARSE.

I also have a XFX 8800GTS 640 for almost 6 months and im really happy about. But nobody here mention about bought a cheap or used 2nd 8800GTS 640 and put them in SLI.... Can be this a good choice? Really worth?

Its in-between the GTS and GTX. We can all argue on a what are perceptions of what "slightly" and "a lot", though I personally would think "a lot" would be faster than a GTX.

Suck it up. It sucks, but quite a few people were waiting for this card. Youve been able to play your games at a some lower frames than the GT for a while now, while some of us have waited.

And it depends. Look at what people are getting for them on ebay. You probably wont be as successful selling it here on the FS/T.

Wow. I'm depressed. I'm still tweaking and tuning my old 5950 to run games. I'll buy your gts 640.......ummmm do you take animal pelts as currency in your state.

His sense of entitlement is palpable.

And history would be on your side.

After 8 months, a move from a GTS to a GT is marginal: Normally, 8 months time would yield a new generation of cards of that would perform at least a couple times faster than the previous generation. The move from a GTS to a GT isn't anywhere near what would be considered a large performance gain. That he could have a card for 8 months, and not have it surpassed by something that performs 2-3 times as well should make him happy.

OP, you still have a card that can outperform a GTX when overclocked.

Graphics cards get much better and much cheaper faster than any other component in my experience.

I think we should applaud nVidia for finally dropping graphics card prices to where they should be.

I've had my 8800GTS for a few days over 3 months. So I paid more for a crappier card, AND I can't use eVGA's step-up program (if they would've even allowed it). Life sucks, doesn't it?

Just keep your card dude , and hopefully you can pick up another one (with cheaper prices) they are already are nudging down...

Oh.. I just checked back, and this tread is actually still alive! (wow)

Yes, yes.. You guys are right... I shouldn't have been whining. Things are not as bad as I thought they were. My best option is to OC my card and keep using it since when OC'd the gap between it and GT at stock is very small. It's the best bang for the buck in my particular case anyway. Thanks to all those who proved me wrong. I appreciate it.

Be it as it may, I hope that this thread was beneficial to all GTS owners out there.
