My employer is replacing my current desktop and has left the task of finding one for $2K or less and I have to make a fast decision. Unfortunately, I cannot take advantage of any good deals becuase we have to purchase through a state contract and generally no special promotions like rebates, etc. can be applied. Burns me to see Dell deals going for $300 that I would have to pay probably closer to $700. Also, have to go Dell, Gateway, HP/Compaq, or IBM. I don't much care for IBM desktops (like their notebooks though) and feel they are overpriced. Prefer Dell over Gateway and HP. I finally configured a setup that has a 2.6 or so Pent 4 and other good specs and have enough money left to apply to a monitor. was originally going to get either 18 or 19 inch flat panel, but saw a good price on the 17" LCD TV/Monitor that's still within my budget. My question is, how well would the 17" TV perform as a monitor and would you recommend that over the 18 or 19" monitor only? I cannot remember the resolution of the TV but know it is less than the 1000 by 700 or so I now use.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance, Bekker Dell LCD TV/Monitor

For games a TV would be fine. However for text work because the standard TV resolution is about 320x240 you are probably better off getting a monitor. However if you have a TV that is a decent size and can take resolutions of about 800x600 or greater you might give it a shot.

Give me an LCD monitor anyday however.

The resolution is much higher than standard at something like 800 by 600 if I recall .... might even be HDTV ready. Would that tend to change your choice?

I found that the native resolution is 1280 by 768 and this information is copied from Dell:

Choose a Dell LCD TV / Monitor for . . .

Great Performance Dual function, wide screen TV and PC monitor with Picture-in-Picture capabilities (when connected to a PC)
Superior picture quality HDTV ready, wide aspect display capable of 16:9 format

400:1 contrast ratio and DCDi? by Faroudja video processing technology for crisp, clear images, even with fast-paced action video (e.g., sporting events)

Wide viewing angle up to +/-88° from center (vertical and horizontal) for a great view from any position in the room

Sleek industrial design with display that is 3.58" thin
24 x 7 toll free technical support

That soubds good to me, but I am no exoert. Help? I have to decide like yesterday!

check if it has DVI/s-video/VGA input. if so, then yes, you can use it, but there will be those black bars on either side, and the best resolution you will be able to use is 1024*768

you're MUCH better off with a real monitor.

My vision is so bad I cannot use any higher resolution anyway. That's what I currently use. Have a video card that will go way higher but I cannot see the font.

thanks for the advice
