Need Advice OverClocking opteron165

So ive jumped on the opteron 165 band wagon. I had an athlon x2 3800 that i had clocked at nearly 2.6hz with no problem. I figured if i could get the 165 to the same speed being that it had a bigger cashe size it would perform better. I've got it clocked at a little over 2.5ghz. it will run 280X9 with nearly stock vcore. when i try to increase the fsb to 290 it wont post. I tried increasing the vcore to 1.42 but it wouldnt post and i didnt want to higher the vcore because i figured it was my ram timings that were holding me back not the vcore.

here my system specs

Asus A8N-E
Opteron 165 @ 2.5 ghz
EVGA Geforce 8800GTS
300 GB Sata HDD
2 X 1 GB Corsair PC3200
Antec 550W Smart Power Supply

I'm only using conventional air cooling. The processor even around 2.5 ghz only read 35C in bios so im figuring that heat isn't going to be an issue. I have good circulation in my case and my basement is cold. Here are my BIOS settings im interested in any feedback i get from more experienced overclockers.

CPU FSB FREQUENCY-280
PCI-100MHZ
CAS-3
TRAS-8
TRP-3
TRCD-21
TRC-16
TRFC-22
TRWT-2
TREF-16
TWCL-1

Thanks Fellow Computer Enthuasists!

I have the same motherboard and cpu. I bought the Opteron about 2 weeks ago. I got it up to 2.7ghz. It idles at 40c and get up to 59c with Prime 95. Perfectly stable though.

I have the fsb at 300 and the HTT multplier a 3x.

I also have the same setup and my settings are the same as above.

MyNameIsDarth,

what is your North Bridge temp? mine goes up pretty high at around 70-80c. I also replaced the old heatsink/fan with a large one but still getting high temp.

HTT multiplier should be at 3.
What speed is the ram at, you are using ram memory dividers, right?
Without dividers, at 280FSB, your ram is at DDR560

My Opty 165 is at 2.6GHz, stock volts. There is very little performance difference with the larger Opty L2 cache size. I would doubt you would notice much.

Yeah there will be very little difference either way. Since your 3800+ reached 2.6ghz, I would've just stuck with that. Most of the 165s don't seem to be able to go much past 2.7ghz or 2.8ghz without a decent increase of voltage which is a factor with higher temps, which then leads to a better than stock heatsink & fan required for those high frequencies. And even if you could reach 2.8ghz with the cooler, a 200mhz increase and the extra L2 cache might translate into only being 200-400mhz faster, depending on the application.

Note that the 165 has a 9x multi, so you want your motherboard to be able to run at say 300mhz HTT to reach 2.7ghz.

Set your HTT multiplier to 3 also

Set your memory to the lowest speed to rule that out (for me, it is 100/200mhz DDR which is HTT * .50).

Hopefully your motherboard can run at 300mhz HTT/FSB.
