Need advice on what LGA 775 processor to choose (C2D/C2Q)

So I recently scrapped my desktop running an E8400 and discrete for a ThinkPad X201, Core i5 520M, Intel HD graphics w/ Ultrabase and use this as a my main PC.

Turns out even though I don't game heavily, I still want to have the option to play games every now and then... I want to have another desktop. 🙂

Anyways, I was thinking about throwing together a cheap LGA 775 setup until I can save up some money to build a new Sandy Bridge (or whatever new technology is coming). I am planning on buying most of the "core" hardware used -- Proc, Motherboard, RAM to save some money.

Question is what CPU do I go with? Should I get the best bang for the buck C2D or should I look for a Quad?

I am also thinking I may can convert my linux server to a Windows desktop and be happy with just a CPU+RAM+Video Card upgrade. As I said it is running a E6600 w/ ASUS P5VM board that I pulled from an old HTPC (upgraded to a board with onboard HDMI).

Your e6600 will oc to 3200hmz no problems it also had double the cache.

I would start by keeping your complete HTPC and buying only a good viedo card.

I would buy an Athlon II 250 + a cheap AM3+ mobo that can take AMD Bulldozer + 4G ram

AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz $59,99

MSI 970A-G45 AM3+ $84,99 after mail

Or

ASUS M5A78L-M LX AM3+ $59,99

and 2x 2GB mem
G.SKILL NS 2GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 2x 14,99

$149,96 with ASUS or $174,96 with the MSI

I would sell the e6600 + motherboard + mem and i would put a little extra for the AM3+ platform so you will be able to upgrade to Bulldozer CPU later on.

Putting money to dying Socket 775 platform is stupid imho.

What about purchasing an i3 + new 1155 mobo?

Good to know. Do you have a recommended board or would I just stick with my P5VM?

Ok, this makes sense. I'm guessing you sold the E-8400. Unless there were limitations with the P5VM board, that might have easily OC'd to 3.8, 3.9 . . .

If you still have it, see if you can't find a 2x4GB dual-channel memory kit, and verify motherboard compatibility. They still sell DDR2 of that size and configuration for my own LGA 775. Or -- if the P5VM seems to work fine with all slots filled, pick up 2x2GB memory with approximately the same spec as you already have.

Sorry . . . . I should check again what the OP said . . . well, just some thoughts.

To clear that up, yes I sold the E8400 and P5Q Pro board and took a E6600 and P5VM board out of an HTPC and built a server. The E6600 and P5VM board are the only pieces I still have in my possession.

A used E8400 would get you about 3.6ghz easy for about $100. A Q9550 would get you about the same, but with 4 cores, at about $180-$200. Check the FS forum where you just might find a post of mine.

Both chips cost more than they are worth based on speed alone, but they should hold their value reasonably well, especially the quad, since they are at or near the top chips for that socket. Future upgraders often overpay for high(er) end chips to avoid a full MB/CPU/Mem upgrade.

There is not point in buying S775 because it is a dead end. For about the same price you can have something that can take a bulldozer next year.

For comparison, here's the cheapest-possible-core-Sandy Bridge build I set up in [thread=2188515]another thread[/thread]:

- $50 motherboard
- $26 4GB RAM, and
- $78 G620

Total: $154
Can: take any Sandy Bridge processor currently available up to i7 2600(k), and up to 16GB RAM (8 cheaply).
Can't: overclock, or provide 6Gbps SATA, or USB 3.0. 🙁

^^^^^ Second this. Coming from a current LGA775 socket holder I would also recommend going against building a new S775 system since you just dumped your previous parts.

Either a new AMD AM3+ chipset board or an Intel socket 1155 / 1156 (preferably P67 / Z68 1155) or even Socket 1366 X58 build will give you a much more modern system for either the same price or slightly more.

I don't get it. Might as well start saving now instead of spending money on a C2D.

But the best bang for the buck in CPU history for LGA 775 is Q6600 GO Stepping

4 Years ago people were on this CPU like people are on the Sandy 2600k .

I have yet to see 100 percent usage, unless I render. Crysis 2 takes up avg 60 percent CPU power. and my FPS is 60fps no matter what. 8x AA , wow 🙂 1080p

With this you can wait until Ivy Bridge or its predecessor. I would say wait til 2013 or 2014. Which is why I say get the Quad it will hold you. I dont know if you want to overclock ? We can help you do that. Your P5 board will fit this CPU nice. 8GB of ram also would be good.
