Need advice on upgrading my processor

I currently am running an AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz (266FSB) T-Bird on an ASUS A7M266 board. I was looking to upgrade my processor this summer and I have someone that is willing to buy my processor for about $65-$70. I noticed that I can get an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ for about $70 online. Would it be an advantageous decision on my part to sell my processor for that price and buy the AMd 2400?

I must be missing something here. Is the XP 2400 + compatible with your motherboard?

If so, then why wouldn't you do this? You can effectively get a newer brand new chip by trading in your older used chip.

Yes, I am pretty sure my motherboard is compatible with the XP processors (I remember seeing the bios update with support for XP processors). The AMD XP processor is a Socet a (462), correct?
