right now, I have an old Abit BE6-II with a Pentium III 600mhz processor. This computer is a gaming computer, maybe the occasional paper will be written on it, but thats about it. Money is not an issue, I'm wondering what the best setup to buy is. I need a new Motherboard, new CPU, and new RAM. Any advice on what to get woulod be appreciated. Also, I currently run windows 98, should I get Windows XP, or hold off? which is best for gaming? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

soyo dragon+=150
768 megs of crucial 2100=210
xp 1800=178
alpha 8045 with fan=45
inwin q500 case=80
431w enermax=80
lite on 16x dvd=60
plextor 24x cdrw=130
audigy sound card=70
klipsh promedia 5.1=400
fans&stuff=~50
2x80 gig@7200 rpm maxtors=300 (150 each)
geforce 3 ti500=$300
that's 2000$

This is the best system that you can buy today. 🙂 XP is best for gaming - the issue of which os to use is near non-existant. XP Professional is the best OS out there now.

Good reccommendation, I would go with 512 MB instead of the 768 MB, change the plextor to Lite-On to save a few $$$. Just my opinion.....

Changes from first system mentioned...

-512mb plenty
-Speakers - Logitech z560 approx $140 "For the price, there are no other 4.1 speaker systems that can even get close to the Z560?s."
-XP or 2000, either is an excellent choice when moving from Win98. Pure gamer go XP...
***case- Antec 800 or 1000 series, everything the q500 is in a better package. (i own both q500 and 840 cases)
-Power Suppy the 840 and 1040 Antec include a 400watt monster of a PS. The 300watt models are also excellent for that size.
-Sound card not really needed as the Dragon+ has sweet built-in sound.

Actually the only improvement i have recommended is the case-(Antec), everything else was just to save you a few pennies without losing leading edge performance.

*must resist desire to upgrade* lol...
