Need Advice On This Power Supply

LOGISYS 500W MESHED RED LED ATX / BTX POWER SUPPLY, Model "PS500MSRD" -RETAIL

Link Here

Please let me know what you all think about this power supply. It's for an AMD Athlon 64 3200+.

Okay, what I'm looking for is a decent 500 Watt power supply (PSU) for about $60 shipped. I realize that power supplies get up there in price, but this is what I can afford. I CERTAINLY don't want to slap a $30 power supply unit in this box. I would also prefer to get it at NewEgg.

Despite the watt ratings, the Seasonic is more powerful than either of those. Marketing for ya!

You pretty much get what you pay for with power supplies. The thing to look at is the amperage, especially on the 12V rail. I personally wouldn't go with anything under 22 amps if you plan on doing any overclocking at all.

Okay, if I do plan on overclocking.....what would you suggest for the price?....or am I screwed there on the price?

I dunno that I can afford that right now. Just purchased a bunch of other things, so am a bit limited on funds. 🙁

I took a chance on this one AGPB Dual Ceramic fan 500W ATX12V Power Supply With Support for Intel 915 & 925 Chipsets, Model "AP-P4ATX50F12" seeing as it claimed be be Prescot ready, it's powering my buddies pretty heavily loaded and overclocked system fairly well. He's got a BFG 6800GT PCI express, DFI NF4 board, a 3200+ winchester currently @ 2.3 but he hasnt really pushed it yet, 2 DVD drives, various USB stuff, 2x 80mm fans 2 x 120mm fans, 1 200GB seagate HDD, ect... 12V holds steady at 11.91V according to the Bios and DFI's monitoring software under load. other 2 rails are right on or a bit over.

Really, wait until you get more money.

I bought an Aspire 520 Watt PSU with 34 Amps on the +12Volt rail for 56 dollars. I was getting readings as low as 11.5 volts under load and I think it's causing big problems for me. My Soltek board already went out (90 dollars) so I bought a DFI board (120 dollars) and now the DFI board is starting to malfunction. (I originally thought I had a bad Soltek mobo -- but two bad mobos? Plausible, but unlikely)

Now I'm writing this message on a PIII 600MHz machine waiting for a Fortron 89 dollar power supply to arrive today.

The more you research the more you see these guys are right -- DO NOT skimp on the PSU. What good is it to save some money if you're going to be spending that money on more components down the line due to bad power? Honestly, I'm even considering returning this Fortron for an even MORE expensive PSU. It really is an area you want to spend more than you'd think you would when you start reading reviews and tutuorials on PSUs.

Okay, I have heard BAD BAD BAD things about Aspire....people saying they will NEVER buy another Aspire PSU again. What about the one Arcanedeath recommended? Link Here

Please let me know.

I doubt you need 500W of power, especially for a 3200+ system. Go for an Antec TruePower 430W, or something of that nature.

Most of the guys here overstate power needs(period)

that said, you DO need a "quality" supply that'll meet your current and near-future needs more so if you are an +extreme o/c'er". . . . .

Aspire is generic . . . . i got a 350w with my Aspire case that worked fine for an o/c'd P4 but upgraded anyway to an on-sale Thermaltake 480w which will take care of my current and my next upgrade (a 9800xt to a 6800u).

Can U link me? Can't find that on NewEgg, which is where I prefer to shop.

So, what is your opinion on that Thermaltake I linked (above your last post)?

ThermalTake is a decent budget quality PS for most needs including moderate o/c'ing. it looks like you are referring to "my" 480w TT PS on NewEgg's page . . . just remember it has "only" 18a on the 12v rail so your o/c will probably only be "moderate" (which is what i like anyway, upping the FSB with a less then 10% voltage boost).

It's OK

(i got mine last year on sale . . . . but paid some shipping so it's about the same price)

edit: what's the REST of your system gonna be like? not sli

DreamerSpawn, the psu that Arcanedeath mentioned is the same one I have. I haven't built my system yet to try it out but the company seems to be getting good marks from different review sites on their power supplies. Plus its cheap. Another thing is that it is heavy like 5 pounds heavy which is good, compared to other same power "rating" power supplies which weigh like 2 pounds. I use rating very losely for some companies.
So thats my 2 cents on the whole thing.

Roy

Thanks guyz! I appreciate the input. Apoppin....that's not the 480 watt...it's the 500. Here are the specs on it, copied directly from NewEgg:

What I'm wondering, is if it has the 4 pin connector for the AMD Athlon 64 (CPU Power)? I don't see it...and it's probably a stupid question...but I NEED to make sure it has it.

Sorry about the last post, if anyone read it before I edited it. I was quoting stats and such from a different power supply. I edited it so it's right now. lol!

you still missed some of it 😀

i usually edit it quick, keep quiet and hope no one notices. 😛
(or cares)

yeah, same as my 480w tt. . . . decent . . . it has the extra connect for the P4 but not the sli requirements for 24 pin.

Now, which systems take the 24 pin? Haven't run across it yet....just a few examples...not asking an entire list. hehehehe.

Yeah, I should have edited it and not said anything. LOL! I guess I brought attention to myself. hehehe. Live & learn.

Oh yeah, thanks fer the advice. I'll go fer that one. Thanks so much. I know people believe in spending an arm and a leg for a PSU, but there ARE some of us that can't do that.

sli uses the latest 24 pin connect . . . .

and just remember w/tt you have "only" 18a on the 12v rail . . . . not for extreme o/c'ers 😉

Okay, can SOMEONE suggest a power supply in the 500 watt range within the $60 range??????? TIGHT budget. NEEDS to support an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ that I plan to OC...to what excent (on the OC), I'm unsure as of yet. He has lots of L.E.D. fans and two pair of cold cathode lighting. A CD Burner, DVD ROM, 512 MB RAM, 160 Gig Maxtor 7200 rpm drive.

PLEASE HELP! Time of of essence...if possible.
