need advice on the cheapest upgrade ever

hi,

i totally need to upgrade my system (XP1800 Palomino@XP1900, 384MB, Radeon 9800 Pro, KT266 Dragon+) but i am totally broke.
Besides, i feel right now i'd rather wait for end of the year (pci-express etc.) for a 'major' upgrade, A64 etc.

But i could to the following:

Get a used XP2600+ Tbred (the one for 266FSB since my mobo cant do higher than 140FSB).
Get either an additional stick of 256MB or 512MB 2100 ddr ram.

This would make a XP 2600+ system (how overclockable are the Tbreds btw ?) with 640MB (or 896 MB) ram.
It would be VERY cheap for me to update - but it's only temporary anyway. At least i have a goof gfx card 🙂

Would this system be halfway decent for Doom3/HL2/Farcry ? Or would the DDR2100 ram/FSB be too limiting ?
Would you do it (i also need to do a minor mod on the board for the 2600+ to put it on) - or would you say the effort is not worth it and just
keep the current system and wait and do a nice update end of the year ?

greets

How about a new heatsink, or maybe a new fan for you heatsink? Those are between 5 and 35 bucks depending what you get. Or a fan controller. All those are cheap.

Im not even going to comment on "hl2/doom3 compatibility" , although try sell off your KT266A + Palomino to someone else and attempt to get an nforce2+tbred-b deal....that or wait.

I would wait 🙂

I just think there are too many changes going on right now in computers and if you buy something a few weeks later you find out your not going to be able to upgrade it in the future :/

I wouldn't get any DDR2100 because it'll be useless come, well, it already is pretty much for anything new (P4, AMD64 or even some of the Athlon XP's).

The motherboard is probably holding you back anyway (since the KT266A sucks, I have one myself and I wish I didn't, with an XP1900+).

I would just stick withwhat you have for now and upgrade fully when you ave the money. Unless you go for new RAM, proc and mobo now, then you're going to be held back in one way or another, or just wasting money (if you get new RAM that won't be much good for the future).

Wait Wait Wait or throw your money at me 🙂
Your system will play doom3 HL2 better than mine (not saying mine will play them badly either, but only because of your graphics card...)

I'm waiting for Windows 64 edition, then I'll get an a64 rig 😛
