I'll be doing small-ish projects mostly. Like guitar mods and similar little projects like that, so I don't need anything huge in wattage. Are there any other tools that I should get along with the iron to make it easier on myself? Are some brands better than others? Should I get flux? My buddy said a 'solder sucker' would be something I should get if I'm trying to get rid of some solder... but of course I'll turn to the nerds at ATOT for the final say. Thanks guys 😛

a stand for your soldering iron is very handy as well. you dont really think about that stuff until youre out in the desert resoldering power leads on a 24vdc power supply that your fabricators wired backwards. and the sucker is a good idea too. as well as extra blades in different shapes.

Links to any recommendations? That would help 😛

For most hobby work, a 40 watt iron will suffice. For my amateur radio work, I use this: Weller station. It has variable power from 5-40 watts and is very easy to work with. Get a sponge, a de-soldering bulb, and a few assortments of solder. For great electrical connections, I like using silver solder.

The avionics shop where I work uses Antex soldering irons. They are light weight, compact, handle easily and seem to work as well as significantly higher wattage irons from other manufacturers. They are also fairly affordable, and have a wide variety of tips available.

Their eBay store is here.

Be careful with the wattage.. I did a mod job on my xbox when they were still $300. I had done some miracle solders and gotten to number 35 or so when it began melting off points on the motherboard because it was too hot.

That should be a good unit for your needs.... I like the SILVERSTAT Soldapullt it will last you a lifetime. You will also need flux remover if you don't use water suluble solder. The flux will be in the core of the solder and you should not need more than that.
