Need advice on smallest point/shoot that takes good video

I'm helping a friend get ready for a Europe trip. She wants to take a camera that will her to zoom more than her iPhone does. She wants to take pics and a lot of video. What is the best point/shoot camera out there right now in the $500 to $1000 range?

The RX100 is the go to in this situation.

Spend a few minutes glancing over this - it does a great job giving you the exact cameras in this area you want to look at.

Note the Panasonics are the editors picks - their touch screen interface might be more adaptable for smartphone users.

I'm not sure which have flippable screens ( I think one of the Canon's do ) - that might be a nice feature for selfie mode (if that would be a consideration)
