Need advice on selecting a fan for my Athlon 1.4 Ghz 266 FSB processor (Socket A)

I am running an Athlon 1.4 Ghz 266 MHz FSB processor with the MSI Socket A motherboard (MS-6380) K7T266 Pro with Raid. I don't like the fan it came with and am looking for a much more powerful one, that won't be extremely loud or cost too much. I am thinking I go with a ThermalTake CPU cooler. I have limited it down to 3 models. 1) Dragon ORB3 (part A1135) 2) Mini-Super ORB (part DU0462-8) 3) Mini Copper ORB ( part DU0462-9). Does anyone recomend anyone of these three as being the best, or most cost effective? OR are there any other cpu cooling solutions that are even better, but similar to these? NOTE: I would like this cooler to support atleast 1.5GHZ clock speed.

truly dont' get any orbs...they just plain suck. look good, but don't perform as well.

if SwiftTech, ThermalRight, or Alpha...even OCZ might do.

I like the Alpha CPU coolers. Which one will give me more than enough cooling for my 1.4 ghz? I liked the PEP66U (comes with fan). Will this work or what else do you think is better

Anyone know where to get the Sk-6 with delta fan for cheaper than about $54? Just how good is this cooler?

Yes it is an excellent HS but the delta is loud so be aware of that.

Here is where you can buy it with a Sunon for $45 or a Delta for $46.

if you've got the cash, you won't go wrong with a Swiftech MC-462a. It outperforms everything else on the market and is quieter than most of the other top performing heatsinks, especially those with a delta. It's DBA rating is just a bit lower but the pitch is far different. Think of a running car engine vs. a plane engine at the same noise level - Which one would be more annoying?

Anyhow the Swiftech is as good as you can get with air cooling, hands down. Catch is that it's about $80. You can pick one up at Sidewinder computers. Look at a good review at AMDMB.

(So I copied my response to another thread - Hey, it's the same question!)

I'm with garion, swiftech is the way to go. I am installing mine tonight, just got it. :D

As for those people that don't like fan noise: try this...since it is summer and hotter than hell in most places. Get a desk fan, aim it at your bed and turn it on and leave it on all night (basically it boils down to white noise as long as the fan spins at a constant rate and does not oscillate). It takes some getting used to for the first couple of nights, but after that I guarantee you'll hardly notice. I've gotten so used to the fan noise in fact that it takes me awhile to sleep with out it, so much so that during the winter I have to turn it on and face it away from my bed. Now I'm looking forward to winter because I'll be able to leave my computer on all night and get the same effect. :)

The point of my rambling is maybe you should give a "noise maker" a chance, not only will you get better cooling and better performance out of your machine, but you may get better sleep as well.

If you are buying a 1.4 and planning on OC'ing, you better get used to the HSF noise or spent $$ on quiet HSFs like Noise Control's Silverado ($90 including shipping.)

Majority of the reasonably priced HSFs ($20~$30) that can support 1.4s have Delta or similar 6200RPM fans are noisy.
