Need advice on running 25+ ft long monitor cable

A buddy of mine has a 30" HD LCD TV/monitor that he wants to connect his PC to, and needs a cable about 30ft long. The 30" LCD only has one DVI input, which is connected to his satelite receiver; The 30" also has RGB, component, S-video, and composite inputs. His video card has DVI, Svideo, and RGB out. If he runs the DVI cable to his 19" LCD monitor at his PC, can he split it to make the long run to his 30" LCD (and split again at the 30" LCD)? Or should he just run the RGB cable to the 30"? Will there be much loss in quality? If he used the S-video out, the max resolution he could use would be reduced wouldn't it?

Can you buy 30ft RGB cables anywhere? All the ones I've seen jump from 25 to 50ft.

I bet you can have one custom made for 30 feet. Or just get a cat5 to RGB converter and run the signal over cat5 🙂

you can get one made at an internet retailer for 30 ft length..

I wouldn't split the DVI. The card will try and read monitor information from the DVI, and it won't work right if it's split. You would have to use a switchbox.

If the LCD does not have RGB input, your best bet would be to get an RGB to component converter box, and run component to the HDTV. This will at least support 720p (1024x768)

Also be aware that some HDTV's do not support 1024x768.

Edit: I am running the following:

PC connected via RGB to 50" DLP HDTV (15 ft cable), via DVI-RGB converter to 15" LCD panel.

Really?

HOW BIG DOES THIS LOOK?

😀

Edited OP a little. 30" LCD does have RGB inputs too (5 types of inputs-maybe 6 if it has coax!).

Who makes custom length cables? And you're talking about an RGB cable, correct?
BTW, is an HD15 monitor cable a VGA or an RGB cable (or both?)?
This shows them as two different types.
This calls it a SVGA cable, and anywhere that sells BNC type (what I use) call it HD15 VGA to BNC RGB.

Where can you get a cat5 to RGB converter? I can't find one. I guess since cat5 does broadband, it can do video equally as good as RGB? I could probably make the cat5 custom length myself. So is it cheaper to get someone to make a custom length RGB cable or make my own cat5 and buy a cat5 to RGB converter (and I would need two, correct?)?

DVI Switchbox = too expensive.

Not necessarily, but yes, DVI is better for long-distance installations on the cheap. I have seen peopel use 30Ft vga nad having it look great but at a price.

DVI + switch box is the best but unfortunately the most cumbersome option🙁

Can you explain what that is (and where to buy)?

Not sure why he said to get a breakout cable, it doesn't look like that's what you want. That would be if you were going from a HD15 connection on the PC to 5 seperate BNCs on the LCD. The impression I'm getting is that the LCD has a HD15 connection on it as well.

To answer some of your questions - HD15 is the connector type. RGB is the type of signal going through the cable. Technically, you could run component video through the HD15 connection if you wanted to.

In any case, you can definitely get good quality with a 50' cable. For inexpensive cabling that is good quality, I've had great luck with www.pccables.com. There are obviously better quality cables out there, but for the price these are excellent. I myself run a 35' VGA M-M from them with no apparent signal loss (compared with a 6' cable) to a plasma.

Here's a direct link to the cable you probably need:

Good luck!

Hey, that 35' looks perfect. Thanks. What does M-M mean?
I guess I knew RGB was the signal but some people call the cable that too. So looks like you personally call them VGA cables (w/ HD15 connectors)?

BTW, I use HD15 to 5 BNC on my CRT PC monitor but I think that breakout box was RCA!?

It's male to male, which is what you want. The male to female is an extension cable, this is a replacement cable.
