Hi

guys I need advice on a router/firewal and a cable modem
was looking at some netgears, FR114P and FVS318 routers and CM212 cable modem
anyone had any experience with these two or any netgears in general ? I hear netgear has a bad customer support 🙁
my first choice was 3com but they dont make modems 🙂 and the router I found made by 3com doesnt have such a good firewall 🙁
maybe someone can recommend some other brand/model ?

please advise

Thank you
Dan

I have a Netgear MR814v2. Very good router. Take a look at dslreports.com forums for any threads about those models. If there are any major issues, someone will post it there for sure.

My cable modem was provided by Comcast, so no choice there. Not like it matters as long as the traffic goes through. 🙂

The cable connection you have coming in, is it a dedicated line or is it split in some way?
The reason I ask some cable modems require much higher signal quality to operate then others. I have a line that is split, when the cable company installed my modem they gave me a motorola surfboard, 2100 i think.

Then I replaced it with a toshiba 2100 an that modem wouldn't work at all for me because the signal quality was to low.

Just something to keep in mind if you have splitters degrading your line quality.

For router choices

I have had good luck with

Netgear Fr114p
Netgear fr114p

dedicated, I think Ive decided on the modem, I think I'll get the motorola surfboard 5100, heard very good things about it
here is the sad story: I currently have an RCA (renting from comcast) which went out of commision long ago, its been acting up something bad, the power connector is screwed up and it resets whenever something touches the cable and sometimes for no reason 🙁 I gotta jiggle it and hope for it to work again, huge pain

you have the fr114p ?? that is the exact model I was considering
any trouble configuring it ? any problems with web sites ? some people who bought it say they had problems with some websites after installing the router

Thank you
Dan

I have deployed multiple fr114p routers, no problems thus far. But my users are only doing websurfing and basic applications.

Not sure how these perform for gaming enviroments.

Sounds like your on the right track 🙂

Cable/DSL Routers are going on sale every week for $10-20, and there are No real big differences between them. The variety of comment about Good and bad Router are many time a reflection on the knowledge of the user rather then the capacity of the hardware.

Having bad plugs and loose connection is more important to worry about, and take care of.

I wasn't trying to sell him something he doesn't need jack, just sharing my experiances with him and that I have had good luck with that particular brand/ model.

Thanks

Diaonic wanted to ask you something, do you need a special card to configure this thing ? how is the config process overall ?

Thank you
Dan

No cards or other equipment is required, out of the box you can plug it in an use it. You can do advanced configuration if you want via web base mangement tool. Or you can just plug it in an go. I would recommend doing firmware upgrades though.

get the linksys cable modem/router.. built in 4 port switch, and wireless G capabilites.. even if you dont have wireless yet basically for expansion.. and if you do alot of intranet gaming get the speed booster.. 108mbps versus 54.. big difference on the internal level..

good luck.. i believe they are $169 at your local best buy

I'm thinking of doing something very similar so this is all very good information for me. Just curious. If I hook up a router to my cable connection (also have the old RCA modem but have no problems) do I have to do anything? I know when I reformatted my HD and installed Windows 2000 that the computer was automatically connected back to the internet so it seems to me that the information that says this person is a cable internet user is on the modem? Is this incorrect? What I would like to avoid is spending hours on the phone with Comcast trying to trouble shoot when it has to do with the connection between the router and the modem setup issue?

Not sure if this is clear or if it is even a concern.

Thanks

as long as you dont change the modem you dont have to worry about talking to comcast

1. For the Router to work it has to be set to right connection (i.e. Cable or DSL)

2. If your Cable ISP is using your main computer MAC as a form of communication, the MAC as to be Cloned to the Router.

3. If you are on PPPOE DSL the ID and PW has to be entered to the appropriate menu. The ?Always Keep Alive? has to be checked.

After setting the above the Router will function at the Default Level.

P.S. Some of the verbal terms used above might be worded differently by different Brands.

So, it is a wonderful Idea to read the Manual (The Quick Setup paper thing is Not the Manual).
