i download video, play games( BF2, CS, other FPS) and i play mmorpgs. i like to be able to run 2-4 mmorpg clients at one time. im not really sure what that tasks the most... cpu im guessing and ram. without further adu, this is my tennative build

MOBO: ASUS P5B Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard $156.99

CPU: Intel Pentium D 805 Smithfield 2.66GHz LGA 775 Dual Core $92.00

CPU Cooling for overclockability: Thermaltake CL-W0042 Liquid Cooling System $179.99

RAM: CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 675 $259.00

VID CARD:MSI NX7600GT-VT2D256EHD Geforce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 $174.99

PSU: Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W Power Supply $69.99

HD: Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 $159.99

k, i would like to know if i am going overboard on anything. total price came out higher that i had expected.

Toms hardware said i could get the pentium D to 4.0 with the water cooling and it will scream. i wanna know if im spending too much on the cooling tho when i could just get a more expensive chip and run at stock spead, thus... ditch the cooling...?

i heard reptors are sweet but it is expensive, im willing to pay tho if my load time are really fast.

i entened on trying to get that ram to DDR2 800 or so. im pretty sure i will need 2 gigs to make my gaming smooth

i dont really know anything about MOBOs, i picked that one just cause it was compatible to all my parts

im not set on any of these parts, i just tried to spend money the most effective but in the end i wasnt so sure about it.

my current comp is an AMD XP 2600+, radeon 9600XT, geil 512 RAM ddr 400(i think)

i like AMD and radeon, and i wouldnt mind buying them again.

i would like to cut cost/improve preformance. any critisizm is welcome gladly

Ditch the Raptor drive. Too much money, for very little speed difference. Just get a 250GB sata II drive with 16MB cache.

Ditch the water cooling and the D 805. Get an E6300 Core 2 Duo. You can do a conservative OC that should kill whatever you'd get out of the 805.

That should save you a little money, so bump the 7600 GT up to a 7900 GS. They are not much more expensive, and they are much faster.

yeah im problly a dumbass for beleiving in that pentium D ******. it can get to 4.0 but looks like its old technology compared to the 1.9 core 2 duo.... im guessing. might need to buy a little heatsing and fan with that core 2, nothing too fancy tho.

looking at the 7600GT and the 7900GS: the 7600GT has 256bit memory interface while the 7900GS is at 128. memory clock is faster on the 7900GS im sure that both of these have their strong points, i just dont know what they are. do you guys?

and all i see are SATA 3.0..... i dont really know anything about hard drives, SATA and RAID and what not....

You don`t need water cooling to get that pentium D to 4.0.....

I have had my Intel 3.2 EE stable at 4.4 for at least a month...before droppping back to 4.0

I'd definately get a faster CPU, and opt for a cheaper hard drive. if you dont OC you can use stock fans. I just bought a pentium D 3.8 for $230 on newegg. 2x2mg cache is important, dont skimp with the 2x1mg

It's silly to spend more on cooling than on your CPU. If you just spent that $280 on a CPU you wouldnt need to OC

cpu - i would do a c2d, any speed is going to be ok for you,

ram - 2GB ddr2 (depends on how much you plan on o/cing to say what speed),

gpu - mabye look at a x1800xt, x1900xt or 7900gt (you could cut back on other items to get the better gpu since most game are gpu limited anyway),

m/b - just get a good brand that does all you need - you may also want to consider pci-e arrangement as some of the gpus take 2 slots, so depending on how many pci or pci-e 1x or 4x slots you need could determine the m/b due to layout

psu - enhance, enermax, fsp(fortron), pc&p - usually for the price the fsp seem to offer quite a bit of bang for the buck

hdd - raptor is faster but at the cost of size - your call. is there a noticeable difference = yes, is it worth it=depends on you

hope this helps 🙂

I should warn you that the onboard sound on the ASUS boards can be really flaky. I've had two recently P5WD2-e premium and a P5N32. Both would play the sound, but really jer k k y. even when doing something easy, like booting to windows. the startup sound we be fvcked up. this is probably because it's very CPU dependent, and when one of your processors is pegged out (50%CPU usage) you're sound will crap out too.

For that reason I'm using a PCI sound card.

sounds like you have had some bad luck with onboard sound - the last 6 or 7machines i have build for myself and a dozen i have built for others have all used onboard sound with no issues, and many different boards incluing msi, asus, ecs, abit, dfi, foxconn and probably more. i have never experienced what you are talking about...i wish i could recreate it just to see what causes it. are you sure the m/bs weren't bad and in need of a rma?

any advice for these specific questions?

SATA II or 3.0gb/s is marketing crap, ignore it. RAID is not economical, nor are raptors. You can't afford them on your budget. Just get a SATA (or SATAII, there's no difference remember) hard drive with enough room. The Seagate 7200.10 line is a good one to check out.

Memory interface is not everything, if you want to see how the card really does then check the benchmarks of them. I dare say there'll be one of the 7900GS on the main site somewhere.
