I just graduated from college and it's time for me to move out. Most people that come to college stay in the dorms or an apartment, but I live in a college town so I saved some money and stayed at home while I was taking classes. I'm looking at a nice place now that I would be moving with a friend into. I haven't signed any papers yet, but I'll have a decision by noon because apartments go fast. The apartment is unfurnished, 2 bedrooms, nice living area. What advice do you have for someone moving out for the first time?

make copies of all your correspondence with the landlords/property owners (including checks)
make sure all the utilities get into your name
make sure all damages to the place get recorded before you move in so they can't pin it on you later (take photos if you are really worried)
take parking / laundry into consideration, those two can be real headaches
if you arent going to have a landline make sure you get good cell reception in your apt

thats all i can think of for now

Advice? Don't move out until you have a job that can support it. Stay with your parents as long as you are welcome.

Figure out how much "spare" money you have a month, cut that amount in half... if that amount isn't enough to afford rent, you aren't ready to move out. The other half will account for utilities, food, and various other expenditures.

It's all about understanding your budget.

I'd happily live with my parents, no matter how dorky it seems, and be able to keep an extra $400-$600 a month I'd be spending living on my own.

Pay your rent on time and don't trash the place :p

It'll take months to be fully situated in your apartment and feel at home. Ask how much the normal power and heating bills cost.

Good luck.

The lease I would be signing is only for 6 months. I have a good job right now, but is temporary until the end of the month. I'd like to do it as an experience, and force some independence on myself. I'm very dependent on my mom right now for stuff like cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc.

More like $800 - $1200 :(

Just make sure the person you're moving in with is responsible. Don't let him/her stick you with all the bills while they look for a new job etc etc. Mofo better know how to budget.

Yeah and when you move out you'll be dependent on your roommate or girlfriend for that kinda stuff ;)

Mebbe you should learn that part before you try to go it on your own.

That, and with a temporary job, I'd be weary of changing your living conditions so dramatically.
