I'm looking for a full-face helmet in the cheap-$270 price range in either a large or an XL size. I'll worry about the color(s).

Suggestions???

Shoei

If you can spend a few more bucks and they fit your head shape, Arais kick ass.

Edit: make sure you got a Snell M2000 cert on the helmet.

Cool thanks.

And for those who are wondering, I'll be picking up a 94 cbr 1000 tommorrow

I've got an HJC and I love it. My only complaint is a slight lack of ventilation, but I think that's fairly universal with full face helmets. Mine has a tendency to fog if I'm at a stoplight for a long time. Not a problem as long as I remember to crack the visor open when I stop moving. With the bike in motion it vents well.

EDIT: How much different is Snell M2000 from Snell M95? Got my HJC in '99 and I'm wondering if it's worth it to get a new helmet with the M2000 cert.

I have an Arai, but $525 is out of the range for you I guess. I used to have an HJC and it had nice ventilation - if you consider the visor randomly opening itself because it sucked to be nice ventilation.

It's your head, spend as much as you can on a helmet.

Or maybe you could have simply tightened the visor hinges? Never had a problem with the visor on my HJC. It doesn't leak air around the seal and it doesn't fly open or stick anywhere.

No can do - It was definitely comfy, and I never really noticed how bad it sucked until I tried an Arai on. See if you can borrow one from a shop for a test drive and see how it works... Then put on the HJC again and then you'll notice a huge difference.

A vote here for HJC
FYI- a little secret...

Helmets that cost 600 dollars are not safer than 150 helments, provided they meet the Snell standard.

Difference is in ventilation and weight. Of course more expensive helments are spiffier, but so are 200 dollar sunglasses.

Yeah, I realize that safety ratings between helmets are going to be very similar to meet Snell and DOT standards. With bigger bucks you get better fits, improved ventilation, different (removeable) sizes of pads for different sized heads and faces, etc...

I broke my Arai screwing around (it has a chin spoiler that retracts) and I pulled it out to far. The Arai rep at the AMA Superbike races fixed my helmet for free, and even shined it up and removed all the bugs....very cool.

i don't like full faced helmets, thus bought a 3/4 faced HJC. My mom also has the same helmet, just different color. Every helmet company has different head sizes, so you must try on each manufacturers helmet before a purchase as there is usually a no return policy for a helmet (for insurance reasons so you don't return a crakced helmet and they don't resell it).

my $.02

First concern is size. If you don't know if you are large or XL, figure it out now. Your helmet can have the best certification in the world but if it is too big, that's irrelevant. Err on the small side. A helmet that at first seems small is usually the right size.

In your price range, something from Shoei or HJC sound be fine. I'd take a look at liners when you want to make a decision. I have an AXO RX-5 helmet that has the most comfortable liner; it's a good thing when your helmet becomes a pleasure to wear.

The difference between Snell M-95 and M-2000 is basically in headform sizes and weights...basically, M-2000 is better if you have a very big head; otherwise it is essentially the same as M-95.

Make sure you not only check size, but also "fit". I never even thought about this till I went to Pro Italia and a guy who specialized in helmet fitting (believe it or not) showed me the difference between length and width (hehe).

I wore cheap helmets all my life but when I could finally afford one, I got an Arai and I could tell the difference. It feels less like a helmet and more like an extension of your head. I love it.

And I'm not really down with the whacky color schemes so i got the matte black.

3/4 is a waste IMO.
You are still going to need lots of plastic surgery if you hit the pavement and roll.
