Need advice on member site

Hey guys, I'm planning on creating a website in which people can register, create their own galleries, submit pics into group event, etc. (unique idea, i know) The problem is i'm just a designer. I can make the site look spiffy but if there is no functionality then what's the point. I'm honestly thinking gallery 2 is the way to go, with lightbox2, and some other stuff.

Since i'm just a designer and not a coder i am lost with all this php, mysql, and xml talk. I dont know what type of database to create and do not know where to start.

I'm hoping you guys could give me advice on locating open source solutions for:
Gallery: Gallery 2
Member database:
Maybe a CMS if necessary:

I saw modx and became interested in the idea of my site being SEO and maybe even use ajax technology.
Also i plan on using siteground as my web host. dont know if that matters or not.

Thanks in advance for just reading =D

Maybe this would be much better suited for the programming forum? Also, PHP is uber easy to learn, MySQSL is like talking, and XML isn't really even a language. It is simply labeling everything. I honestly think starting a W3Schools.com would be a great place to go.

If you're going to start a member site, this would be an amazing project to start learning a bit of the coding aspect of everything. It couldn't hurt to get some development under your belt. PHP.net, and tizag.com rock. Check out phpbuilder.com too. Those are great places to start. W3Schools though is where it's at. It will have a lot of the examples that you're looking for on the site, and it will help you understand how to use them.

If you're interested in AJAX maybe you should PM Atheus, he's great at it and could probably tell you where to start looking.
