I just purchased a used car from a friend who never registered the vehicle in his name when given to him. The pink slip title is still in his girlfriend's name and it was given to him a year ago. The problem is that the pink slip was already filled out and his girlfriend signed and dated the release of interest section on 2/2/2006 with 130k miles. The back is filled out and signed with my friend's name as new registered owner in pen so I can't erase it. He's moving out of state and the car now has about 140k miles. The registration stickers are also out of date since Dec 2006. What should I do to register the car in my name?

You should contact the DMV, and ask them. She'll have to send in a copy with YOUR name, address, insurance info, etc. to transfer. They may be able to send her a new copy, which she can then sign over to you. Just remember to have cash on you so you can pay for the plates when you turn the old tags in.

You might want to go to the DMV w/her anyway, no way you will have time to wait
as it takes awhile to get a slip back from DMV. Look on the DMV's website for the
requirements to transfer in person (how many id's needed ect.) CYA on this as it
sounds kinda strange why someone would ride around w/ outdated tags for so long...

You shouldnt need to do anything with her. What you need to do is go to the DMV and get a transfer of ownership form. The old pink slip proves that the car was transfered from the girl to your friend, and this new form will show transfer from your friend to you. Then you go and turn in the old pink slip and the new form. This is what I did for the last car I bought. The guy I bought the car from still had the pink slip from the previous owner that he never turned into the DMV, so I took that and the new form that we both signed.

The states vary wildly as to how plates, registration, and title are handled. Be sure advice you get applies to your state. I don't think you should pay for the car until registration and title are transfered. My state, PA, is very picky about when and how to transfer title.
